The opening tear would be what I drew in red as example. Is there a plugin that allows for offsetting these types of faces?
Offset from Tools on Surface which you can get from Sketchucation should do it.
Make sure you aren’t leaving those faces reversed. You should be modeling with the edges displayed, too.
Maybe you can do it without any plugin.
