Hi,
I have not used SU in awhile and am going to subscribe to the 2024 Pro version. Is there a way to import 2017 skp files to the new edition or will they automatically open. Will any features be lost or compromised.
Thanks

They just open. I think you may get a warning dialog that it’s coming from an older version. Be aware that once saved in 2024, you can’t save back to 2017 (unless you employ a plugin).
There are a few plugins like Sketchy Physics that can only run in an old version of SU, but they’re few and far between.
Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I assumed that was the case, but just wanted to make sure before I purchased the subscription.
I presume the new version has more bells and whistles. I am only using it for personal projects, but would like to have access to the 3D warehouse again and layout.
You can get 3D Warehouse from the Web/iPad versions, but Layout is only with the desktop version.
I have only used desktop versions, I assume the web based versions are slower. That being said, the 2017 version I’ve been using has become extremely slow at times, freezes up or crashes whenever I open the paint function.
I’ve found that SU 2017 is not reliably stable on newer releases of macOS. Sometimes it works, other times it crashes at seemingly random events. It is long out of maintenance and no longer provided for download, so there will be no fixes from Trimble.
Yes that’s been my experience, and though I’m just an occasional user, I do need a reliable platform, hence the decision to subscribe to the Pro edition. Was nice while it lasted for free…
Hi Lansdowne, thanks for the post. While it is true that 2017 is less stable on newer releases of macOS, it is still your choice if you want to use it or not. We never will tell a user that they can’t use their license.
We offer month to month pricing for pro if you are an occasional user that only needs access to Pro from time to time and as long as it is non commercial work, you are always welcome to use the free web app that we offer too! I personally find that the web app has been getting faster and faster lately so while you are correct that it is not quite as fast as the desktop version it is still quite potent.
If you end up needing to use a desktop modeling program, there are other options from other companies to consider too although some of them tend to be rather expensive and you would need to learn how to use them so there is a time investment to consider as well.
Hopefully you find a solution that works for your unique workflow and you are able to continue to use SketchUp for many more projects!
Hi Casey, thanks for that info. Yes I might just do the monthly at first then migrate to a full subscription if my needs require that.
