When I draw a circle in Sketchup Free, the color of the border or edge is black. I want to change it to a different color. I’ve watched a few videos but they all seem to be for different versions and they advise going to styles and editing the edges. But I don’t see any setting for edges in Sketchup Free. I’ve also tried right-clicking on the border and changing the material from the default color - say changing it to Ty_Red. However, the color of the border or edge of the circle is still black, even though in Entity Info, Materials is listed as Ty_Red.
So, how does one change the border color of a circle or any object for that matter in Sketchup Free?
When I click on the Styles menu in Sketchup Free, I only see the “Home” icon and the “Search” icon (far right icon in your picture). There is no edit icon.
You need SketchUp Go to be able to edit style settings like Paul shows. There are no style editing options in SketchUp Free. You can select from the various supplied styles and see if there’s one you like.
What I want is if a white cylinder is attached to a dark gray component, I want the black edges for both to disappear so the transition looks seamless. Per a video, I tried using the eraser tool (holding down the Shift key). That worked, but the edges are ragged and there is bleedover. So then I thought, well what if I make the border color the same color as the object. That way it would disappear. But apparently you have to upgrade. While this forum is one of the best ever, the constant prodding to upgrade and lack of even basic editing features in the free version is annoying.
Hiding edges would be the normal way to not show the edges that you don’t want to see.
What do you mean by prodding?
It’s Free! SketchUp Free has a lot of capablility and should be suitable for your hobbyist needs. If it isn’t you can upgrade to Go or there are other products from other sources out there.
Yes. I understand it is free, but c’mon this is a basic editing feature. I would expect other more complicated features to not be provided. Instead Sketchup seems to use a different model than I have experienced in the past.
With regards to edges, when I make components (per my other posts), Sketchup divides the circles and ellipses into sections (probably 24 per the default sides). So, I guess I am forced to select each section (120 in total) and click on hide.
Honestly, the only reason I’m using Sketchup is because it can provide a volume for a solid. I guess, I’ll just have to accept that and use another program to produce drawings and animations.
Having said that, I appreciate the help that you and others have provided me.
It might be a basic feature in a graphics program but not in a 3D modeling application
SketchUp should not be exploding your circles when you are creating components. There must be something else going on. What is the radius of the circle? Is it quite small?
This suggests that you should learn to use the Select tool correctly. You should be able to drag a left to right selection window around all of those edge segments to select them in one go.
120 sides for a circle sounds excessive. What is it you are actually trying to model?
What is your hobby and how do you use these drawings and animations? There’s probably a solution if you’d tell us exactly what you are trying to accomplish.
Not 120 sides for one circle but 120 sides total for multiple components. The drawing was finished except for that, but a workaround just occurred to me that will reduce the effort by about 3/4.
