How to change existing file's template

If I have an existing Sketchup file with a standard template, and I want to switch it over to another standard template, how do I go about it?

I thought I knew the answer, but the online “Setting Up Templates” mentions the menu Windows…Preferences…Template, which seems to affect the default template for a new Sketchup model,

When I double click on a model, the startup screen gives me the impression that I can change the template, but the model opens with its previously saved settings.

What is it you want out of the other template? The style? For that you need to make the settings manually or you can choose the Mix tab in the Styles window and drag in the features you want from the appropriate style in the Default styles.

open the template you want, then import the model into it…
