How to add a material that's not over a color?

Super noob here, just getting started.
How do I add a wood material to the wood drop down section in materials?
When I click Create Material, it always ends up under In Model instead of under the Wood section I was currently in.

What version of SketchUp are you actually using? Your profile implies it’s the free web version. If that’s the case you cannot add materials to the Wood or other collections. You can only add In Model materials. In SketchUp for desktop (SketchUp Pro or SketchUp Studio) you can create your own collections of materials.

No wonder.
Thanks for the reply

You’re welcome.

FWIW I have made collections of wood grain materials mostly by species. Whenever I have a a chance I add more to my collections.

That sounds amazing and extensive!
Would you mind sharing?

Sorry. I give away enough time and knowledge but I don’t share my models or materials.

Even if I did share the material files with you, you would be able to use them in SketchUp Free.

No worries
