Hide Tooltips?

Is there a setting that controls the visibility of native tooltips like these…

I have a feeling in SU2025 this MIGHT be part of the large number of beachball crashes I am seeing. It would be good to turn them off if possible and see if the situation improves.

Look for PrivatePreferences.json and in it find “TooolTipEnabled”: true and change it to false.

Interestingly I found the .json file, but there is no reference to tooltips anywhere within it. This is SU2025 (25.0.570) on Mac. Most of my hangs are when using Profile Builder 4, perhaps it impacts extensions if it is looking for the variable value & can’t find it! I never had these kind of hangs with PB4 in 2024.

From your extract it looks like the setting is part of a bigger entry, so I don’t think I can even just add it?

didn’t find it either on mac, in both shared and private preferences.

I wonder if this could be a mac os parameter rather than a sketchup one ? something cocoa related ?

Maybe it is stored elsewhere on Mac.

yeah, and the tooltips only show if the toolbars are vertical, not horizontal. it’s been a known bug for years, I wonder if it’s related…

ToolTipEnabled looks like it’s to do with Qt, the new UI system in SketchUp 2023 and later, on Windows. If you look in the 2022 preferences you will see it’s not there, and it’s not there in any version on Mac.

You could use the Mac bug, where possible, to make the tools be horizontal, and then you won’t get those tool tips. But I’m doubtful it will stop any issues from happening.

Thanks @Colin. I will write that option off as a potential hang trigger. I assume the “Mac bug” option is a potentially unreliable hack, so I will avoid the risk of making things worse. I would send BugSplats but they don’t appear. These hangs just go to the Apple report window and then if lucky the Reopen option works or I have to reboot to get the recovered file to turn up.

I rarely use the Reopen option, I have so many copies of SketchUp installed that I would rather manually go and open the one I want. Then hopefully a bugsplat window will show.
