Hi guys, I had a weird issue. I have Sketchup Pro 2025 installed and have been working on files with it. I have many older files since Sketchup 2018 which I store on one drive. I was cleaning up my computer yesterday and uninstalled Sketchup 2018. Now all my sketchup files reverted back to Sketchup 2020 and I cannot open them.
I have attached 2 screen shots of what I am encountering. I hope this makes sense.
Hi Dave, this is really weird, because I have sketchup pro 2025 installed and have been using it. All my older files that I have on one drive I could always open and they were all with the new blue sketchup logo. Everything was fine yesterday and now all my files seem to have reverted back to sketchup 2020. I have attched a screen shot of some files I have in one drive and they all used to have the new sketchup blue logo but now thay are all red logo of SKU 2020. So, even when I try to open these files I cannot. Any advice?
How are you trying to open them? Are you just double clicking on them? What happens if you first open SketchUp 2025 and then open them?
Did you install SketchUp 2025 correctly? That requires right clicking on the installer and selecting Run as administrator.
I would guess something happened on your computer to change the file association to SketchUp 2020. Maybe repairing the installation of SketchUp 2025 will take care of it.
BTW, it’s OK to save copies of your SketchUp files to One Drive but don’t open and work on them from One Drive. That’s an excellent way to wind up with corrupted SketchUp files. Instead download them to your internal drive on your computer before opening them.
Why not use Trimble Connect for saving backup copies?
Hi Dave, I am just double clicking on them. I can access the files when I click on SKU 2025 and I can access the latest files I have been working on. When I go to access some of my files on one drive and double click on them it says I need to download the new version of sketchup, which I did again. But when I double click on a file I was working on yesterday which was in SKU 2025 it opens it in SKU 2021. Not sure what I should do? This has never happened when I upgrade to newest versions of SKU . I appreciate your help with this.
So that indicates your One Drive thinks SketchUp 2020 is the application associated with the files.
Again, don’t open files directly saved on One Drive.
This also indicates your computer thinks the SketchUp files saved to your local drive are associated with SketchUp 2021, not SketchUp 2025. This implies incorrect installation of SketchUp 2025. Do as I directed and repair the installation.
FWIW, since SketchUp 2021 was released newer SketchUp model files will open in any version back to SketchUp 2021.
Then you probably didn’t install it correctly. Find the installer in your Downloads folder, right click on it, choose Run as administrator, and then choose the Repair option if it is presented.
Hi Dave, I just did what you suggested and i did choose the repair option. I can open the files that have changed to SKU 2021 when I access them from the home screen of SKU 2025 when I choose open file, then select my device I can open them from there and they will be in SKU 2025. I hope this makes sense?
Thanks alot for your help. And yes, I will save my files a diff way. I will look into saving on trimble connect. Can I open files directly from there? I have never used trimble connect before.
Well, sort of. If you try to open a file directly from Trimble Connect the file is first downloaded to a temporary folder on your computer and then opened from there.
You can access your Trimble Connect storage from the Trimble toolbar or from Trimble Connect in the File menu.
Your profile said you had SketchUp 2023 and now it shows 2025 so you must already have a SketchUp subscription, right? Your Pro or Studio subscription includes unlimited storage on Trimble Connect.
I just tried to save a file to trimble connect and I get the same window pop up. I think I am doing it right? I went to file, trimble connect , save to trimble connect, create new and then I get the window that says I have alloted my trimble connect projects, but I have never used it.
Go to the Help menu and sign out of SketchUp. Then close and reopen SketchUp. Sign in when prompted. Then go to File>Trimble Connect>Launch Trimble Connect. What do you see?
