I get a message about the format when trying to open SketchUp files saved back in 2021 or 2022, and then it opens a new file. How can I open or covert files created previous to SketchUp 2025 so they can be opened?
What does the actual message say?
There is no need to âcovert files created previous to SketchUp 2025 so they can be opened?â Just open the file. You can ignore the message indicating the file was created in an earlier version.
BTW, your forum profile says you are using SketchUp 2019. Please update your forum profile.
Dave, Thank you! I had tried four different files and the message was âFailed to open documentâ, I tried a couple other files and they are opening without any issue. Not certain what the issue would be with the other files.
I will update my profile - thank you for pointing that out!!
Thatâs different and is not specific to opening them with SketchUp 2025. That indicates there is a problem with the file. Typically when that message is shown the files are corrupted due to an issue during the last save. Share one of them so we can see what youâve got.
Where were these problem files saved?

Here is one of the files!
Thank you again
That file is currupted. It might be that @colin can manage to recover something from it with his special tools.
Again, where were you saving the file?
The file was saved to my local drive (drive âDâ) on my laptop.
I think I have it recovered. See if this works for you.
