Having problems with zoom, not related to objects far away

So, the model I have here was originally made in 3DS Max. It was then exported as an FBX file and converted into SKP using Transmutr Artist.

The problem is that whenever I try to zoom in or out, the camera zooms way too far. Here are some things I have discovered or tried:

  • It’s not the kind of problem where something is far away from the model because Zoom Extents works properly.
  • When I select the whole model and scale it up significantly (around ×1000), the problem stops.
  • When I create a rectangle behind the model and select it, I can see the dotted highlight indicating the selected object through the model.

My theory is that during the conversion process, the faces somehow got shrunk and are thinner than they should be, causing the zoom function to take a distant point as a reference.

Has this happened to anyone else before? Thanks in advance for your attention!

I don’t think I can reproduce the issue… can you show us a record of the problem ?

I don’t have any problems with orbiting or zooming but I see an issue with scaling of the groups. I suspect it’s due to the way it was created, the export settings from 3Ds Max or import settings into SketchUp.

After resetting the scale the one object is nearly 900 meters long.

What version of SketchUp are you using?

This means that I will have to work with the upscaled version of the model?

2024 but that shouldn’t matter. I wouldn’t work with the oversized geometry. I’d either fix it at the source or repair it after import. If you choose to repair it you might need to explode the groups and remake them. I expect you could probably also stand to simplify the model using components. You should also place the model at the origin. Leaving it placed far away can create graphics issues.

Why are you still using SketchUp 2021?

Pure laziness, at the company where I work we rarely use SketchUp, only BIM softwares.

But believe it or not the problem was actually related to the version. We upgraded to SketchUp 2024 and the problem doesn’t happen anyone.

Thanks for the attention and for the help!
