Have to explode components before they're dynamic?

If I create a dynamic component in its own file, say component name “box” in “box.skp” and I insert that into a model, I have to explode the thing I inserted before it works as a dynamic component. What am I doing wrong? It doesn’t work that way for components I download from the 3D Warehouse.

You are not saving or importing the component correctly. When you import a SketchUp file into another SketchUp file, the imported file comes in as a component. This is not specific to Dynamic Components. In this case you wind up with an excess level of nesting. Instead of saving the model file, right click on the component and choose Save as … This will result in your component being saved as a SketchUp file on its own. Or, better, set up a collection in the Components panel and open it in the secondary pane with the primary pane set to In Model. Then drag the component’s thumbnail from In Model to the secondary pane. When you want to insert the component into a model, go to that collection and drag it in. Not only is this simpler but when you bring the component into the project model, you’ll have hold of it by its origin so it’ll be simple to place where you want it.

Create the collection folder by clicking on the Details button and Open or create a collection… on the right side of the Components panel.
