Guidelines missing after MacOS Sequoia update?

Hi everyone, I have a dilemma.

It may just be coincidence, but I updated my MacBook Pro to MacOS Sequoia today, and ever since my guidelines are missing.

I’m relatively new to using SketchUp, so I’m not entirely used to the entire program, but it was working just fine before the update.

What I have checked is View / Guides is ticked and Styles / Modeling, guides is ticked there also. All guides on all projects are missing or at least not visible and when I try to create new guides with tape measure no “dotted” line shows, however I can draw a line on the invisible guide, so the guides are there they are just not visible and now don’t know what I’ve done or what to do next.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the classic OpenGL graphics engine, or the new one which uses Metal calls?

Whatever, … try switching to the other graphics engine via the Preferences > Graphics panel.

FYI … SketchUp has not “officially” published that they support SketchUp under Sequoia (yet):

I should have kept this in mind before updating.

try switching to the other graphics engine via the Preferences > Graphics panel.

I have tried changing graphics option still no difference.

Guide lines seem to be there, they just aren’t visible unfortunately.

In the styles/modeling panel, check what color is assigned to guides. I have no idea why an OS update would mess with that, but it’s the only other option I can think of without there being a bug in the code.

In the styles/modeling panel, check what color is assigned to guides.

Just checked, is definitely black and guides is ticked, along with view > guides is ticked also.

Maybe at this point the expedient approach would be to roll back the OS to the previous version that worked for you so you can keep working. Then you can keep working and you can give Apple a chance to refine the OS and Trimble a chance to publish an update if they find they need to do so.

Any chance the guides are on a layer that isn’t visible?

Actually, lower down on the Hardware Requirements page (linked above,) in the section on the new Graphics engine, it specifically lists Intel Iris graphics as not supported with the new engine,

So in this case we would think that SketchUp would automatically be set to use the older OpenGL engine.

@colin can you please confirm?

Okay, so I just changed graphics to “Use classic graphics engine” and now the guides are back… I don’t know how as I’m sure I tried it just after I read your message earlier, but I changed the graphic settings, closed SU and started it again, and they are there… so much appreciated.

Yea, SketchUp needs to be restarted when switching the engine. Perhaps previously you had not restarted?

No problem. It looks like you’ll need to run under the ol’ OpenGL engine until you upgrade to a newer machine. (When you do, pick one with a discrete Nvidia GPU if budget permits. Alternatively, SketchUp does support the new silicon ARM-based M-series Macs and their integrated graphics.)

I did see your message at the time you posted it, but haven’t had a chance to check with the developers yet.

That’s okay. Apparently it does not as his machine with unsupported Iris graphics was set to use the new engine upon first install (first use, etc.)

Thanks all. Only yesterday did I make the connection between guideline malfunction and timing of Sequoia update. I checked with Apple who confirmed that Sketchup is not supported. So happy that I found this thread before going through deinstallation Sequoia reinstallation Sonoma.
The switch “Classic graphics engine” seems to have handled at least that problem. Maybe Apple will decide to support before I find another!

It’s really the SketchUp codebase that will be tweaked to handle changes in Sequioa. Such things are usually done in major yearly updates.

But in your case, your old machine has integrated graphics that may never be supported with SketchUp’s new graphics engine. Apple Metal is supposed to support Intel Iris graphics but for some reasons Trimble has retired support for it.

Anyway, it looks like you’ll need to continue using the old Open GL engine in SketchUp.
