Group objects go missing

I think this is related to erroneous bounding boxes somehow getting created, possibly due to scaling of a definition gone amiss. When the bounds don’t correspond to the actual object, you can’t select it and sometimes can’t even see it!

In the second shared model (the building), at a direction of orbit where the cabinets become visible, if you are zoomed out you can see a bounding box off in space containing nothing. That is the same thing you can see in the image of the second one.

In the building model, I tediously searched the outliner until I found the offending group and did a definition.invalidate_bounds on it and all its contained groups. That restored normal behavior. Exploding and recreating a group would also regenerate its bounds.

Note that scale definition only applies to components, not to groups.

We do have a Ruby way to show the problem. I didn’t yet come up with a set of manual steps to introduce the problem.

thank you very much for your support. my english is not the best, i use sketchup in german.

On my screenshot i could only mark the group if i select a much larger area. if i remove the too much marked effects so that only the top floor is selected, unfortunately the submenu does not open as expected when i right-click. For this reason i can no longer dissolve and regroup the group either.

I hope its understandable what Im writting :slight_smile:

You can download the file on my googledrive:

Thanks in advance

Same problem and same fix (though I don’t know how to do it without using a couple of Ruby statements). Here’s a link to what I believe is a repaired version.

It is the same as other cases. Selecting and exploding the group, and making the contents be a group again, fixes the problem. Doing the selecting and exploding need not be easy though.

Where there any scaling of flip actions used when making the group?

In this case there is no need to explode, simply selecting the group and hitting enter to open it fixes the issue.

This works for the original file also.

Thanks for your help, i will try this after work today evening.

@colin
Its hard to explain, but Im not able to select the group. The only way is mark a hughe area and then disselect the things i dont want to. Then everything I need is marked in the model and the frame u can see in my screenshot is far away. In this case Im not able to make open the submenu with right click. Its realy strange i never had this issue in the last 4 years Im using sketchup.

@Box
In you animation it look so easy to select the group, in my case it doenst work that easy. :flushed:

Thanks everybody for your help!

I understand the problem, of not being able to select. I was asking about your workflow, and how did the group get into the state it is in now. Did creating the group involve any scaling or flip operations.

It works always well until i stop working and shutdown sketchup. On the next day when i want to contiune and load the draw the problem is there.

I am working with about 25 young people new to Sketchup on a Sketchup project & about 70% of them have experienced this error repeatedly in the last week. None of them did anything but select, right click and group (or component) to make their components or groups. One or two of their groups or components just all of a sudden (sometimes after working for a while in the model) stops letting them select, edit and right click them, and the invisible ghost object box pops up. I have been exploding and re-grouping to try to make their models workable for them, but that has caused other issues and ruined the hard work of creating a simple but organized sketchup model that is easy to edit. It also often has to be re-fixed each day or multiple times in one day. I am so thankful to see the potential fix of using the enter key instead of ruining their models by exploding them. I tried that in one model and it worked, so we will see if it will work for the others. I will say, their models are not complex. None of them know how to scale or flip anything, so that could not have caused the error in their models. Also, one model had the worst error I had seen, and would not even let me right click to explode when I had the entire thing selected (not just the problem groups/components). That model was the least complex of all, since that person was behind and was on the first few steps of the project.

Yesterday evening it works well, i hope this evening too.

Does somebody use the mobile App for viewing? Since the group problem occures, i cant open it in the app anymore?

I’m having this issue on my SketchUp for iPad. I also am not able to select the group that keeps disappearing. When I try, it selects everything around it but not the disappearing group. Any suggestions?

You may need to use Outliner to select the group. Once it is selected you can use the three dot menu to explode it, then immediately make it be a group again, see if that fixes the problem.

The problem with that is unless you named the group (which many users don’t do), the outliner shows them all as just “Group”. The only way to find the right one is to click them one-by-one until you see the selection you wanted! If there are a lot of groups that is quite tedious!

You could select all, then use the select - tool to unselect all of the parts that are easy to select. That might leave the hard to select one still selected.

Make sure you are selecting Right to Left, this selects everything the selection fence touches, whereas Left to Right only selects that which is entirely within the selection fence.
