This issue is global for all my students and projects.
I open a new browser page and login to edu.sketchup.com with the “login with google” option
I create a file, title it, and save it to “mydrive”
I use this file to create my model and teach my lesson in class
Within about an hour’s time, I will start getting “unable to save” and “problems contacting google” errors.
When I try to save, it tells me to download a copy just in case and then it goes back through the “login with google” process.
Sometimes this is successful in saving the work, other times it is not. This is frustrating to my students who lose their work.
As a workaround, I have learned to open a new tab and do the login process there. Then I can save the current model usually.
This happens many times a day, for many of my students, on many different models. I would like it to stay logged in to google all day. Is this a problem with my district firewall or maybe yours? Please help! I didn’t have this problem last year.
That is a new one for me @david.conaway. I’ll go ahead and @Tori_SU and see if she has any idea what the cause might be. In the meantime, make sure your students are saving multiple versions of their work and backing up their files.
If I had to venture a guess, I would guess it is a firewall or bandwidth issue but that is honestly just a shot in the dark here. Hopefully Tori_SU will have a better idea what is going on.
Thanks!
Yes, I have taught them how to download a copy just in case as well. I am also pushing them to close browser tabs when not actively working on a model. This way they log back in when they open a fresh tab.
This is also happening in our school that it loses connection to Google Drive and then cant save. The software seems very buggy as we have come to start using this for a couple of months now from an old locally installed 2014 version
Hi,
I’m a teacher in NZ who also uses SketchUp for Schools and I have had massive problems logging in, staying logged in for an entire lesson, saving files, opening my own copied files in Drive and having the students open a template file from Google Classroom. This was fine last term, but since we came back from our school holidays a week ago, it hasn’t worked well at all. Is there a newer more frequent account authentication request that keeps getting sent out?

HI, I’m a teacher in Italy. I use sketchup for school since 5 years ago, with 7 different classes; and all my students use the program also from home, using their computers. I also work from both a Mac and windows, and we are having mass problems with Sketchup: multiple crashes, general bugs, and a lot of problem when we need to save. We also had problems in the past, but now we got a lot of them. Is it a problem with google classroom?Would be more easy if my students use a free version of skt. with their own acoount? Any suggestions? Thanks
Tip 1: I am pushing for students to save often. It appears to disconnect from google drive at random times.
Tip 2: I teach my students how to “download” the .skp file to save a backup. This often works even when they disconnect. You can then re-upload this file to sketchup or drive.
Tip 3: An easy fix I have found, If the student account says it can’t save because it can not reach google drive, open a new tab and go to edu.sketchup.com and login again. Usually this saves whatever work has been done. Sometimes if the program has completely frozen up, it will not save still.
We are having the same issue at our school. Worked well last year but this year, constantly losing connection with one drive, I have students refresh the page as soon as a message pops up, then they are reconnected.
Another problem in SketchUp for Schools.
There has also always been a really bad lag when using SketchUp for Schools (e.g. choose the line draw tool and wait 30sec to see it, then start drawing a line and have to hold for 10 secs to see where the line might go). I really miss SketchUp Pro which NZ’s Ministry of Education used to pay for, it was an awesome tool and I could use it even on days when the internet went down. I will keep half an eye on SketchUp for Schools, but I’ve decided to transition my students over to TinkerCad. It has less freedom, but it works well on the internet and is free to use.
We have the same issue here.
There seems to be a timeout where Sketchup is dropping authenticated google account after a relative short period (seems like 30 minutes, but that’s a guess).
My workaround so far is to start a 2nd session in a new browser-tab, where Sketchup will ask to authenticate. As soon as the new authentication is succesful, one is able to save again in the first tab…
I can understand that there is a timeout, but is there any chance we can configure this timeout?
This lines up with what I see. About 30-45 mins and I’m logged out again in the background. Many of my students lose their work because they are not diligent enough to close tabs and reopen them every hour. SketchUp Please fix this! I never had this problem before.
As a best practice, please have your students save the model when they start and have them go to settings and turn on the Autosave, I have it auto save at 2 or 3 minutes.
This should do it for you students. If they get stuck and can not save, have them download the model from the Home/File menu.
