I have never been more frustrated with a toolbar user experience. It is probably me, I used to use Sketchup Pro a lot, but am not using the free Web version and feel like I’m losing my mind.
The items in the toolbar are constantly rearranging themselves. Worst of all, the Orbit Tool, which i probably use more than any other, FREQUENTLY disappears. I can get it back by choosing random tools, and clicking around on the model, but haven’t yet figured out the right code or sequence to do this efficiently. And for the life of me, I can’t understand why it is not even visible when I try to edit toolbar (see screenshot). I’m in disbelief- am i just not seeing the Orbit tool in there???
I expect this is just user error and an easy fix, so I’m hoping somebody can help me see the light.
Hmmm … I don’t see it in your screenshot from the hobby version but I see it in SketchUp Go.
What happens if you grab the three dots on the right edge and drag it over to the right?
Dragging the three dots on the right expands the size of the window but does not reveal any additional tools. Here’s a screenshot showing it expanded: I am actively using Tape Measure, I can see the Orbit Tool, but have no way of selecting the Cursor.
t edge of the toolbar edit just expands the space for the Tools,
Orbit now appears at the top above the Eraser.
What cursor are you talking about? Do you mean the Select tool? You can hit the Spacebar to get that.
Yeah. Keyboard shortcuts are the move. Thanks.
Looks like I can long click on a tool icon at the top of the toolbar and the Orbit tool will show up.
Do you know that the middle scroll wheel button on a mouse is the default for Orbit and can be used with other tools active.
I did not. That’s a good tip. Not sure how it maps to the Apple Magic Mouse, but I’ll look into it
Thanks
It won’t work nicely or at all.
But if you’re serious get a regular old boring 3 button mouse (the ones with a scroll wheel). Or use keyboard shortcuts.
I am a long time Mac user but I am also a realist when it comes to modeling in SKP.
I have the Magic Mouse and the 3dConnexion CadMouse for use on my desktop.
SketchUp was designed to work best with a 3 button mouse. Apple seems to choose design over functionality in this case..
There are some ‘i would say finger gymnastics’ that work with a touchpad on mac, not something i do but @colin is very familiar with them, he may throw you some handy tips, or should i say, fingertips.
I use a touchpad more than I would like to admit ![]()
Just as a curiosity (not near a computer at the moment), does the web tool bar work like the iPad one, where anything over the line stays where you put it and the tools under the line move around to make room for each other?
This could be a problem with our customizable toolbar. We would love to get more insight into what caused it. Can you try the following steps?
In Chrome open ⋮ > More Tools > Developer Tools
You should see a “Console” with a little > symbol where you can type.
Type (or copy/paste) Debug.showPreferences(); into that space and hit Enter. This will show some information. If it’s not too much trouble, copy/paste the text and send it to me in a direct message. It might help us prevent this problem in the future.
Afterwards, type (or copy/paste) Debug.resetPreferences(); into that space and hit Enter.
Close the browser tab and open SketchUp for Web again.
