Follow me tool on inner angles lower than 90 degrees

Hi everyone,

I’m working on an architectural millwork model and I’m having trouble creating the applied molding shown in the attached image.

The molding needs to run down the vertical section, transition into the curved/elliptical arch, and also continue across the upper straight section.

I’ve been using Follow Me with the same molding profile, but I’m getting distorted/self-intersecting geometry where the straight vertical section transitions into the inside curve. The profile starts folding over itself instead of creating a clean architectural joint.

I also tried creating the straight and curved sections separately and using Solid Tools, but the resulting Follow Me geometry isn’t being recognized as a solid.

What would be the proper SketchUp workflow for something like this?

Should I:

  • create the straight and curved moldings separately and intersect/miter them,
  • modify the Follow Me path,
  • use a different tool/extension for the extrusion,
  • or construct the transition manually?

I’m trying to model this in a way that also makes sense from a real-world millwork/fabrication standpoint, rather than simply making it look correct visually.

So that would be made of four separate elements in the shop. I would model the curved part as a solid object separate from the straight parts. Make the curved part longer than needed and create solid “cutters” to use with the solid tools to make the miters. I’ll make an illustration.

The guides are placed to bisect the angles between the parts.

I’m using a keyboard shortcut for Trim with Bool Tools2 and use it because it respects components. The native Solid Tools do not. I wanted the copy so you could see what’s happening when Trim runs.
