Follow me on a curve not producing a solid object

Hi I hope it’s clear from the image that I’m trying to great a curved step that I use as a solid, and the processes I’ve gone thru to get there. I’ve scaled up the profile (selected in blue) on the left to show what I’m trying to do.

The result not being a solid is the issue as I need to use it with solid tools

I’ve read a lot of other posts about this issue. Deleting internal faces, making a longer curve and then cutting it.

Would numbers of segments in the arc be an issue? Ive ran the profile through 360 degres on a circle path and sometimes that doesn’t even give me a solid.

Any help much appreciated

You could use Solid Inspector to help understand why the objects aren’t solid.

One thing that would help is to make sure curves are welded before running Follow Me so that you don’t have all those distracting edges afterward.

I copied your profile and the path to a new file to eliminate the distractions. I welded the curves and then ran Follow Me. I get something I’ve never run into in previous models, though. The edges at the start and end of the arc shouldn’t be there.

Zooming in on one set of them shows they aren’t even on the surface.

Erasing them and finishing the volume results in a solid object. I discovered applying the “Dave Method” of scaling up before running Follow Me prevents these edges from being created in the first place but none of your segments are so short that you would run into the tiny face issue.

As I say, I’ve never seen this before and I use Follow Me quite a lot.

Thank you so much for yr reply Dave. Super useful. I need to understand welding a bit more so I’ll look up some videos. Sounds promising. Will report back.

Thanks again appreciated!

Select the connected edges, context click on them and choose Weld Edges.

Natively SketchUp explodes curves during the Follow Me operation so if you copy the profile to reuse it, you’d want to weld the curves first. I use an extension from the Extension Warehouse called Eneroth Auto Weld which automatically weld edges after Follow Me. It’s also useful because it will weld all weldable edges in a selection. Very handy when you have complex geometry.

Thanks Dave, this s a great steer thank you!
