Fix Dado sizing when adjusting dynamic cabinet

Hello! Sorry if this is a basic issue, but I haven’t been able to find a clear answer on this in any videos or other forum posts. I’m essentially brand new to Sketchup (just installed Pro 2026) but I have previous experience with AutoCad and Fusion360 (never full-time, only drawing up odd jobs here and there).

I’m playing around with building my own little library of dynamic cabinets in styles that I generally build so I can just quickly drag and drop and adjust my dimensions. So far everything is working good and I’m understanding how to adjust my parameters so everything scales properly when I adjust dimensions. The only issue I’ve come across is if I want to adjust the overall depth of my cabinet, everything moves correctly except the groove/dado (1/2” wide x 3/8” deep and set in 1/2” from the back of my gable/side) will scale.

For example if I wanted to adjust the cabinet depth from 24” to 12”, everything will move and scale together correctly, except now my dado/groove will only be 1/4” wide instead of 1/2” wide, and only be 1/4” from the back instead of 1/2” from the back.

Is there a way to lock the size and location of a cutout in a component to avoid this issue?

if using OpenCutList, use groups as the sub-parts, as OCL does not report groups

I tried searching for it but wasn’t quite finding what I was looking for, hopefully as I use sketchup and the forum more I’ll be able to know which keywords and terminology to use to find what I’m looking for!

Thanks for your help, I built the gable out of three individual parts and it appears to be scaling correctly now.

I’m planning to use OCL so just installed it to test it out to see if I had the issue you mentioned. I initially had issues with the gable w/dado showing up as multiple parts, but making them groups vs. components and then making the whole thing one component seems to be working great! Thanks again for your help, I appreciate it!

It is likely you will rebuild on existing DCs to build your library. It’s important all parts are made unique when doing this, otherwise the part will use the first definition inserted.

Eneroth Deep Make Unique | SketchUp Extension Warehouse

This extension will assure all, including groups, are unique.

Method: First copy the DC then immediately right=click menu “deep make unique”

For DCs already having issues, place instance in a clean file, copy and deep make unique, right click and save to replace old definition.
