File crashing SketchUp when opening

This model is causing SU to crash when I open it. I last opened it with SU23 on a M3 Mac. I am attaching the file an a screenshot of the crash report. I tried to open a new file and import the “bad” file into it as suggested elsewhere, it still crashes.

Crashed my SketchUp (Windows version) too
Crash #685231

same, immediate crash as soon as the icon stops bouncing in the dock. Crash #452

peeking in the code, I see it was stored in a google drive. the file is in 2020 version, was it stored there for some time maybe ?

Hi ateliernab, I created this file with SU22 and I last opened it with SU 23. When I tried to save it on Wednesday night I got an error message saying they could not save it and I should save it in SU20, which I did.

I see. that’s a rare problem that causes this message to appear. something to do with the compression used since 2021 probably.

@colin if you’re around, this is a crashy file.

There is something in the file that crashes SketchUp when SketchUp tries to fix the problem. For now, go into Settings, General, and turn off the option to automatically fix problems. You would do that by starting SketchUp with a new document, or some other file, not the one with the problem.

Make sure not to go into Model Info, Statistics, Fix Problems. That would crash SketchUp as well.

I will try to find out what in the model needs fixing, and ask the developers to look at why that causes a crash.

I realized there will be other problems. Auto save will also cause a problem, and if you do some work and want to save, that would fail too. The only option for now is to work in 2023, and to save as 2020 every now and then.

It didn’t take me long to figure out that something in the scene data was the problem. I had to rebuild all of the scenes. That took a bit longer.

Here is a SketchUp 2024 file, that should behave.

Colin, thanks a lot for your help. I was able to open the file. Do you think I should change my scenes set-up to avoid the problem in the future?

No, I’m sure you didn’t do anything wrong, there is something in the scene data that we don’t handle well. I will show your original file to the developers, in the hope they can see what the offending data is.

Thank you, appreciated.
