File becomes too big - like 1.4GB - making it slow to function, anyway to bring it down?

Hey everyone,

I have a slight problem, I am working on my file and it became tooooo big. It is slow on its startup and sometime just moving one object can lag the computer for at least 10 minutes.

I tried using the extension Cleanup3 but I think the file is too big for the plugin to run.

Anybody has a suggestion for me to fix this issue?

My desktop I believe should be fine:
CPU: intel(r) xeon(r) silver 4214r cpu @ 2.40ghz
GPU: NVIDIA RTX A6000

upload the file on a server (dropbox, or one of the many others) and post the link

Hi @pcmoor this is the file

well I can’t open it. so can you send it again?

@colin is it possible or is this file corrupted?

I would recommend purging the file before uploading. You can do this with an extension or manually via the various trays and model info/statistics.
Then you might have the beginnings of a usable file that you can start to remove all the excessive unnecessary detail.
A file that large is ridiculous and would use about a third of my monthly data allowance to download.

170 million edges + 100 million faces - 1.4 GB file !!

  • Delete everything you imported from 3D Warehouse and then purge it;
  • Learn to use tags for each element separately;
  • Model the elements according to your needs (example: the ceiling rod, which is not even visible, you can either not add it, or make its section which is a circle, of 3 segments instead of 24);
  • The objects you import, however, try to be low poly, if you do not create them yourself as they should be;
  • You can use proxies for the plants.
    And the list goes on.

  • So what I understand is to open the 3d warehouse models first purging them on another file before bringing them to my main file?

  • But tagging models still increase the file size?

  • I shall take a note of this for other rods or smaller details.

  • I would love to model it myself but my colleagues keeps insisting on using models from website because it is already modelled. I am going to get Skimp the file extension to dramatically reduce the Poly Count before putting them to my main model.

  • I tried using proxies but because my colleagues are using the files too and they are using laptop. They cannot access the files easily through the server. Which I am now not gonna use the server because the auto save file does not work right.

Yes

another one is check the material sizes, there is a free sketchup extension to resize them down to 256 ?

And look where your colleagues’ advice got you… an almost unusable 1.4 GB file.

Purging will not help you at all if you continue to import high poly models into your model.

I told you about ‘purge’ in the context of the current model to make it usable after you delete what you imported from 3D Warehouse.
Then, model correctly, assign tags, import low poly models, use proxies.

So this model is a lost cause? I will explain to everyone once we have to re model this later. We are changing the entire layout anyways.

Depends on what is most important. I assume all the props (plants, furniture. etc.) are not critical. The basic room or building can remain, but if you delete all the complicated props and then purge the model (from the Model Info panel) the file should reduce in size dramatically. (Simply deleting the objects from the scene without doing the purge step will make the model draw faster on screen but will not significantly change the size of the file.) You can then decide how to use the empty room or building model in a more economical manner.

I need all the props though as I will be rendering the views from this one big file. Each view shows complex models. What I am suggesting to the team, is to create a file for each view separately and only copy essentials for the Axonometric views.

Download plugin CleanUp3 by TomTom for geometry and Material resizer by Trimble

I highly doubt that’s going to help much with such a bloated file…

You would be surprised what those 2 plugins (CleanUp3 & Material resizer) can do. Most of the time Material resizer from Trimble shows the import of hi rez visual. Usually, a resolution of 512 is enough for large scale model.

I am well aware of the capabilities of these great extensions, but the OP states:

So, the OP wants to keep ALL the entourage that’s bloating his file.
Cleanup3 and material resizer can only do so much…
