Having issues with error code 107, wont let me save the document.
This error indicates that you have added a reference to an external file, but that reference isn’t showing up in the File Reference Manager. Try double checking what external file references are showing up in the References section of the Document Setup dialog, and comparing that list with what files you have inserted.
Sorry for the inconvenience,
Adam
I’m going to bump this old thread because it is still an issue for me and I think I’ve found the cause.
I had a persistant pattern file in my document references that would disappear when I purged but then cause the error 107. I discovered that the only place it was used was in the pattern fill for a clipping mask. Somehow Layout did not recognise this entity as using the pattern for the purposes of the purge, but would then suddenly give an error when it was removed. I changed all my clipping masks to standard fills (not patterns) and the error 107 has dissapeared.
I hope this helps anyone else getting the error.
This is indeed the cause of most of the error 107 issues, and this bug is logged internally but we have not had time to fix the problem.
Thank you for writing up a work-around solution for other users.
Adam
Hi Adam
The problem is occuring for me on a file that I created by pasting other content.
I can’t seem to find or purge the item in Red below
Sorry guys but… 4 years later and still haven’t got time to fix this? It is a big problem. A whole project can get stuck and it is a pain to copy all 117 project’s pages each time this happens. File gets completely useless. No more changes can be done. Can’t be saved as another name/file. Can’t be deleted on “Document Setup…” Cant move forward!! It has happened quite constant with my projects. Please fix it! I just started looking for the error because it has already became a problem with our workflow… And I find this post of 4 years ago!
Honestly and with all respect, I don’t think we should be “working around” solutions for a $700 yearly subscription program. It is quite annoying. More if you have it “logged”. That is like to try to fix a motor with duct tape.
I don’t have fills or pattern for any clipping masks. It is just the stroke. I’ve tried to change all to Stroke and Fill with no pattern. No luck. So I’m REALLY stuck here. Even tried to delete page by page to see what was the error or in which page. After a long and painfull set of hrs… also no luck.
I also get some File Names just as “/” but still embedded, not missin as AK_SAM comments (as some of the files he has). And those seem to be the problem.
Well. Im tired. Need to sleep. Tomorrow… to copy and paste again.
I often found out that this errors occurs when one of the dimension lines looses original geometry. Try deleting dimension lines and maybe you find the culprit.
Often it’s just one page that’s causing the problem. To locate the problematic page start by deleting half of the pages untill you can save the copy of the document again.
Thanks a lot. Will try that next time.
Have 107 message preventing saving a Layout file. This is highly inconvenient and Im at a loss as to why this has suddenly happened to an existing file where all was fine till this morning.
When LayOut is working on a file it unpacks the contents into a particular folder. In File Explorer you could paste in this path:
%LocalAppData%\SketchUp\SketchUp 2025\LayOut\working
Any folders you see in that location are different LayOut files you are working on, or they are documents that were open at the time that LayOut crashed. From the date of the folder you should be able to tell which is the document that you’re getting a 107 error when trying to save it from inside LayOut.
If you go into that folder, and add all of the contents into a new zip archive (I would use 7-zip to do that), you would end up with a .zip file version of those contents.
Move the zip file to somewhere more sensible, Documents for example, and rename the file so that it ends with .layout instead of .zip. That file should then open ok in LayOut, and it will be the document in its most recent state.
The path I gave was for LayOut 2025. If you are still using LayOut 2023, the path would be this:
%LocalAppData%\SketchUp\SketchUp 2023\LayOut\working
Hi @Rudhamstile,
This error code happens most often when you have an entity with a pattern fill that is then used as a clipping mask for another entity, and then unused file references are purged. The current workaround is to find the clip mask entity(s) that have a pattern fill assigned and unassign them prior to purging, or not purging your file references. Understandably, these solutions are not ideal.
We have already found and fixed this issue such that those workarounds are no longer needed - unfortunately that fix will not be introduced in the 2025 version of LayOut.
Sorry for the inconvenience,
Adam
Error 107 goes away when I stop one drive.
