Customize toolbar on Mac using latest version of SKP

Since I installed the latest version of Sketchup Pro (Version 25.0.659), I have no idea how to customize the toolbar. For years I went to VIEW - CUSTOMIZE TOOLBAR. A window would open and I could drag the tools I wanted to my toolbar. No Longer! All I get is a vibrating toolbar and no way of dragging anything. And no way to stop it vibrating. I have to close the file and reopen it to get out of this mode.
What am I missing? Google search only produces results related to older versions. I appreciate that Sketchup has zero interest in supporting Mac users these days. But this is ridiculous.

This is not true.

have you experienced the issue I describe?

I haven’t, but I can try it tomorrow when I get back in front of the desktop.

there is a bug with very specific extensions that cause the problem you’re describing.

thomthom selection toy is one. 1001bits tools is another. simply turn it / them off and you can customise again.

where did you read that ?
most of the sketchup staff is on mac. sketchup has massive interest in supporting mac users. so much so that they are reworking the whole UI right now to make working with pc and mac seamless.

Good to know, when I do test tomorrow I will have to turn these off…

Ok. A bit harsh of me. I am very frustrated at how poorly SKP performs on a Mac compared to a PC. The ā€œdefault trayā€ for instance.

… In general, I get better results on a mac than on a PC.

the floating panels instead of the tray are just a different approach, some will find it better some won’t. and in any case, the next UI will basically be the PC UI on a mac so you’ll feel at home.

off course it’ll come with all the problems of the PC UI, the bad contrast, the empty space, the UI incoherence… and the bugs

I’ve never used a PC. Don’t even know how to turn one on. Just basing my options on videos of Sketchup users who are on PCs and I wish l could have multiple rows of tools, be able to stack my trays etc. at the moment, I have so many floating toolbars - it can be v frustrating. There’s not enough room on the main toolbar for me to fit all the tools I want to use.

Not sure if Fredo’s ā€˜Lord of the Toolbars’ plugin works on a mac, but if it does I recommend you check it out.

Its completely declutterred my screen and made drawing much faster and easier.

Yes it does but personally I prefer toolbar editor, it’s not officially supported on newer versions but Dan, a member of the forum, did some programming magic and created a file that makes it work with newer versions, I can share it if you want.

You’ll be able to do that on Mac with the new UI that’s been developed, however, that’s a practice that I don’t really share, most of beginners use to fill the screen with toolbars as soon as they discover extensions and leave a tiny portion for the most important part, the viewport. It is possible to model almost anything without the use of extensions, most of them are like shortcuts for modeling something that would take longer if you use native tools. Its better to create toolbars with either of the extensions mentioned and activate them as you need, you can create a toolbar with your most used tools and stack it permanently and create toolbars for different uses, I have a toolbar with my most used extensions, tools that I can’t live without and that I haven’t assigned a shortcut, a toolbar for organic modeling with plugins that are not necessary for 95% of the things I do with sketchup, a BIM toolbar with tools that help with the BIM workflow and a render toolbar with Vray and Enscape tools, I activate them as I need them, most native tools if not all of them I have assigned shortcuts and I don’t need them on my screen.

Hi @francisquitof

Thanks for confirming. Could you describe what makes you prefer toolbar editor over lord of the toolbars, and yes please, I would appreciate it if you would share Dan’s file.

Thank you very much :+1:

:weary:

just watch videos of sketchup users that are on mac.

I’ve been using MacOS since 1984. I’m so used to floating tool palettes it doesn’t bother me. I like having absolute freedom which way they go and where they go. At my desk, I rely on an external monitor for main drawing, and load up the smaller laptop display with palettes.

The thing I HATE most looking at some people’s Windows environments is so many rows of tools, there’s no space left it the drawing window to draw - the most important space of all.

. Not true. From an enthusiastic Mac Sketchup fanboy. (Although the Revit import feature available on Windows would be greatly appreciated.) :slightly_smiling_face:

Mine seems to work on MacOs. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1v6Lu_59jn3SqU8mKazO6YMEYSy8awQqi/view?usp=sharing

the revit library only exists on pc because revit only exists on pc.

yes. because you don’t have one of the problematic extension installed as I mentioned above.

Hello ateliernab,
Thank you for solving the issue. I had the very same problem and was not able to solve it myself. SU Pro Support is looking into it but so far hasn’t come up with a solution. I also informed Pro Support today within my open ticket about this thread. The workaround you suggest works for me.

I deleted the latest update, made a clean install of the prior version, migrated all my extensions from SU 24 and deleted Selection Toys. Then I updated to the current version and the customizing functionality was entirely available again.
Until either SU or Thomthom will provide an update I’m fine with this as long as SU 25 is fully running.
Hope this helps for all other users facing the same malfunction.
