Creating a Texture Library for Sketchup

Poliigon Screen Shot

I am hoping to improve my texture library which I have under documents in my pc using windows 10. It would be great to have the same set up as Poliigon with a sphere showing the textures. Currently I have a separate file showing pictures from a screen shot. Any recommendation on setting up a texture library with each texture having a picture or better yet a textured sphere.

I don’t think there’s any way to do that in SketchUp. The thumbnails for the materials are created from the actual texture image in the .skm file. If you were to edit the image to show as a sphere in the Materials panel it would wreck the material for use in your models.

Thanks for the reply Dave

I would prefer to keep my texture libray within my pc 's program if possible. Is there a format that I can save both on my pc and a USB similar to Poliigons.

I don’t know Poligons but SketchUp will look for your custom materials in the directory set for them in Preferences>Files. I use the default file location for my custom materials collections for SketchUp.

SketchUp materails are .skm files. I don’t think any other applicatiions will be able to use them.

Attached screen shots show how I organize my library now using documents from Windows 10. As you can see I have to have a separted file for texture images which is not the greatest. It would be great to be able to have the actual texture under the picture if possible.

Again, you can’t set up SketchUp material thumbnails as spheres like that.

I separate my custom woodgrain materials into libraries by species.

Here are the thumbnails for the materials in my Pine collection.

Note in this case the images are long thin rectangles because the textures are all about 14 feet long and somewhere between 12 and 20 inches wide. (I found some wide boards for some of those textures.)
