Whenever I try to change the background colour SU freezes.
I have opened the Windows Task Manager to close SU and find numerous sketchup_webhelpers listed.
Have I done something wrong?
Does it go Bong when you click on it?
I’m going to guess that you have more than one monitor and the colour change dialog is opening in the space between screens.
To get it back you can use this sequence of keys.
Hit alt and space together, then tap m, then tap any arrow key and finally move the mouse around (without clicking) until the dialog comes into view.

However when I select Styles/Edit/ Background the screen freezes and I can’t do anything other than save and close the program down (alt/control/delete)

You might want to go to Window/Preferences/Workspace and hit the Reset Workspace button…
