Can't purge my model

Everytime I try to purge my sketchup model it freezes out my computer.
I got a lot of unused tags which may cause the problem, but when I try to remove those as well it freezes out the whole model.

Anyone with some usefull tips?
Thnx in advance

Best tip: share model here.

Given the model is 442mb compressed and 1.7gb uncompressed - I imagine that the freezing is it actually just working , doign the purging you’ve asked and you need to wait longer.

See the statistics of your model.

Your file is 464 Megs. It contains close to 7.4 millions edges, close to 3.2 millions faces, 9160 copies of components. 6487 groups, etc.

This is a lot.

Purging all takes quite a long time.

Purging components took about 5 minutes.

Purging textures took more than 1 minute.

Then, when saving, SU advised me that the file could be purged. I clicked Yes and I am still waiting after more than 5 minutes.

I will edit this post when the save is completed.

There are 10974 materials in that model

I’m running some scripts to try and tidy it up, but it’s taking a long time.

@mfranken your model didn’t get this out of control in a few minutes. It’ll take time to repair. I also started trying to fix it using my usual method. Started with fixing incorrect tag usage.

Now waiting for purging to complete before moving on. So far it’s been about 45 minutes.

Purging didn’t take long, though doing a save as took some time to do. Here’s a 184 MB version of the model:

Purging unused stuff toook longer on my machine than for @colin I guess but I also reduced the excessively large materials to a more reasonable size and deleted some stray geometry located at a huge distance from the rest of the model. That reduced the file size to 142 Mb. Still huge and could stand more cleaning. Running CleanUp3 reduced the file to 112Mb.

There are 10,000 or so tags and perhaps matching materials (which are in the file, but not part of the materials tray)

I suspect this is where the main pain is coming from - anything I try to do with them takes like 45 minutes to process.

I hadn’t tried yet. Am trying my work PC now, and it’s taking a long time to open the model.

On my PC, opening took a long time, like on my Mac, purging didn’t take too long, but opening the Save As dialog took so long that I rode 15 miles home before it was showing. The saved file was about 28k bigger than the Mac purged file, which I suppose isn’t much difference out of a 184 MB file.

I think the long time to see the save dialog is because of there being over 9000 components that need verifying.

Your file is absurdly big for a house. I copied everything from the model space and pasted it into a new file. It still took some time, and it’s not completely purged, but it’s faster than waiting for it to get purged by SketchUp’s native tool or any other plugin. Besides all the things that have been pointed out, you have profile edges and length snapping activated. Profile edges just load your GPU unnecessarily, and length snapping can lead to inaccurate measurements.
I useed JL scene tools to import the scenes from your file into the new file, and gave it a try using CleanUp3 to check if it takes less time.

Thank you all. Yea its a large model with a lot of interior stuff as well. Which most likely makes it a big file. Normally purging never froze me out. But I guess I should wait longer to make it more useable.

Did you use an extension to do that or import a file from elsewhere?

One minor thing to know about, profile edges don’t cost in performance terms when using the new graphics engine. Shadows and ambient occlusion do, but profiles don’t.

Nice, I never have that activated so I haven’t noticed it and don’t remember if I read it on the release notes last year.

Here the file, I couldn´t wait for it to get purged by any tool, I Recommend you to learn how to work on SketchUp. How you must organize it and optimize it, never download 3D models directly into your model. and learn how to group things, there are a lot of groups that make no sense. Learning the basics will improve your workflow 100 times and will save you a lot of time with future projects. I would actually start from scratch this project cause it is going to take longer to purge it and fixing all the reversed faces and groups, It will be also a great training if you do it properly.
