Calculating estimation or lengths for electrical cables/wires total and for each group: how to?

Hi,

I guess this will be just another question like those similar already here.

For calculating costs/estimation I am using Opencutlist.

For creating electric wires I have two options:

  • use just a line tool, then weld edges (or group them - whatever you like). This makes one wire/cable out of a group of edges/lines. But it is impossible to pass it to Opencutlist, even if I will create a component (it will have no visible objects inside).
  • create a “cable” component which consists of a extruded rectangle at approximate dimensions and some fixed length of actual cable available at any offline store. Then use something like Component Stringer to automatically place this component along a path created above. Opencutlist sees this cable and calculates totals.Of course not for a whole bended/angled/grouped cable, but for each segment. And this approach also ignores any groups I would have made in my project. I will end up in a whole useless bunch of segments of such short “cables” and only its total length in Opencutlist. But I need length of each group displayed on estimation too.

Ok, maybe Opencutlist is not exactly for those things, I admit.

Is there any free plugin or any other approach to calculate lengths of lines (edges, wires, cables, etc) in groups and total?

I am open to any suggestions, dynamic components and scripting too.

Thanks!

You could ask @medeek if the electrical plugin generates data you can use.

I use profile builder and quantifier pro, they’re not free but it’s totally worth it buying them, mindsight studios sell them separately or as a bundle.

If you want something free, then use the DCs with the native report writer.

Simple line components (wire) with instances used to name different selections (or can use tabs, colors) with option to sum the counts. With example select a few lines and change instance name and/or color, see update after regen report

A script that places and stretches components is available via private message, similar to

You could make more complex profiles,

Thanks for suggestion, but it is paid soft and I am trying to avoid that.

Thanks, I see. I am trying to avoid paid soft as much as possible.

Thanks for the example. I see your point. Yes, this is worth considering. Still, stacking components one after each manually would be pain (unless your script or API can mimic Line Tool behavior)… I’ll have to play with current example to decide how to handle it further.

For anyone interested, I’ve found a plugin which does exactly what I want, but it lacks localization:

Well, for free you can’t complain.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining: that plugin is localized to my native language. I just mentioned this issue for anyone else interested.:+1:

Well you get what you pay for I guess. How much will this save you in screwing around and manually calculating things?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Are you paying for SketchUp?
