I just had a problem with my Sketchup 2026. it keeps BUG SPLATting every time I open my on-going works. or even selecting New Model. It wasn’t like this a few days ago but now I can’t do anything. I tried to open it as trial also, still cant open. I tried re-installing but to no avail. Just when you needed it most.. What could be the culprit? Please help! Somehow Layout still works. I filled out this report forms so many times just to make sure I let Sketchup Support is notified. Help please?
Usually the following can cause it:
A Windows update “ruined up” the graphics driver. Go to the graphics card manufacturer’s website and download and install the latest graphics driver.
It could be an extension that you installed before the error occurred. You should disable that extension.
Hi Dan,
Thank you so much for your efforts.. I tried renaming the PrivatePreferences_backup.json as you said, When I opened Sketchup, it reset but on my trial email account i created. I signed out and signed in my registered subscription account, It Bug splat again. So I ran it again and then it indicated that its recovering from a crash and has disabled the graphic engine. Now its back on again.
I will try to run my work through and let you know the rest.
Cheers!
Raymund

Hi Dezmo,
Thank you for reaching out. I appreciate it. I’ve updated my Video card driver twice already (NVidia) but still no dice. I tried DAN Rathbun’s suggestion to reset by renaming PrivatePreferences.json. It reset. and loaded with my trial email. It loaded but when i changed the user to my own account subscription. It crashed again. No idea. By the way let me share my latest crash report. Thank for your helo. Raymund

I think that someone like @colin, a SketchUp employee, needs to refer this to the SketchUp development team who have access to the source code and bugsplat reports. We forum participants are just users who don’t have that access, so we are only able to guess based on similar crashes other users have reported.
Hi @Steve, After trying to reset sketchup by renaming the PrivatePreferences.json file as suggested by @Dan, I was able to open my sketchup, both from the new model and existing models options. Right there and then I uninstalled all extensions as per @Dezmo’s advice, and now it’s working so far. So I think it’s all about the extensions I was trying out. Given a chance I will soon find out which extension gave me the headache. Let you know soon. Will run sketchup through the works. Thank you so much for the great advice guys!
Be aware that the most efficient way to track down a bad extension is to turn off half and see what happens. If it still fails, try with half of the ones that were on. If it doesn’t fail, turn on half of the ones that were off. Repeat this process and you will quickly find the culprit.
I found the bugsplats you sent in. You mistyped your email address, which added to the challenge! Next time you have a crash (hopefully not soon), look at what your email is in the bugsplat window.
All of the crashes seemed to happen when extensions were loading. It varied slightly, which one was loading when the crash happened, so I’m not sure what to blame. A few times it may have been the Bezier Tool extension, but other times that one loaded ok.
As it seems a fresh start has helped, hopefully as you reinstall extensions they will work without a problem.
Make sure that SketchUp is set to use your dedicated Nvidia 4070 GPU.
Win 11 Start > Settings > Display > scroll down to Related Settings
expand Graphics > scroll down to Custom settings for applications
In the list, look for SketchUp with the path to SU 2026 and verify that it is set to the High Performance Nvidia GPU
If it is not in the list, add it and browse to %ProgramFiles%/SketchUp/SketchUp 2026/
… and select the exe SketchUp.exe file and click OK.
Then set it to the high performance GPU.
