I’m trying to print black lines with no shading and a white background (like the patent office likes). Most online advice does not apply to sketchup web. Tried exporting into edrawings, printing to pdf, wireframes, and many other things. Photo modeling looks good except all the lines are colored – printing in pdf makes the lines very light grey.
Sketchup Web, paying.
Select the Hidden Line style from the Default style collection or edit the existing style to select the Hidden Line face style and make the background white with no sky. If you edit the style remember to update it with the changes.
I cannot thank you enough. I tried the hidden line choice in the styles, but not all the lines appeared. But the missing element was turning on profiles. I cannot tell you how much this helped. I’ve spent hours almost finding the answer. Saved it as patents as you showed.
Time to update your forum profile then. It says Free plan.
And fill out your operating system and graphics cads details while you’re at it.
That information helps us help you!
Follow up question. Hidden files and settings are set as in the above video, which makes most of the model as I want it. (black lines on white with no shading). But there are two items that have lots of lines that I can’t figure out how to get rid of. (See the attachment) If I remember it right, I made one item by downloading pipe from the warehouse, either by downloading elbows to connect the pipes or by using follow me. The other is a simple short tube that I made (probably) by push pull.
Does anyone have any insight into how to get rid of all the extra lines?
Thanks very much. This worked for one set of problems. For the more complex pipe structure, when am able to highlight and soften/smooth, some of the lines do not connect. I’m adjusting my hidden line settings and will see if it works.
That doesn’t really give enough information. Maybe you have separate groups? In any case you would need to select that geometry and use the Soften/Smooth Edges feature again. Don’t overdo the softening angle.
The pipe structure has four or five groups (I think I’m using that term-of-art correctly). I turned on soften/smooth on each one and have similar line weirdness. Changing the angle does not have any effect. Same with changing profile parameters, or adjusting or turning on/off other features of the hiddenlines style. Would it be possible for me to send you a link to the .skp file for troubleshooting?
You’ve already helped me very much, and I’m right near the finish line. I would hope to someday return the favor or make us square.
You do have Profiles enabled in the style so what @AnnoNiem is referring to isn’t the issue. And although there are a few hidden edges, they aren’t it, either.
So on the elbows, the angles between faces are such that the softening angle needs to be increased to around 40°.
Note that there are a number of places between the straight sections and the elbow where softening won’t help because the faces aren’t aligned correctly and there are gaps.
How did you model these components to wind up with that misalignment? I’m also wondering about how you plan to build this framework. There’s a great deal of inconsistency in your model. Are the elbows separate from the straight tubes or are the tubes going to be bent? Are the wyes going to be welded or is there a separate wye coupler? Here I’ve colored the different components in the framework. Each component has a different color.
Yes! Exactly that except for the shading. I don’t recall how I got to here. A lot of hacking around.
In the (real-world) prototype, the structure is pvc pipe with couplings for elbows and Ys. It’s a patent drawing so I can show it one way and then expand the scope with words.
How would you recommend I fix this – maybe delete the existing pipes and try to redraw from scratch?
