I have SketchUp Pro 2018, it is making me back save files from AutoCad 2018 to Autocad 2013 before I can import them into SketchUp.
Is this normal? Shouldn’t I be able to just import the AutoCad 2018 files?

Yes, unfortunately it is normal. Autodesk introduced a new DWG file format with the 2018 version. I have not yet encountered any non-Autodesk software able to read the format. Probably the people who make third party file converters haven’t yet been able to read it so it remains proprietary to Autodesk. Other Autodesk file formats have proven an even tougher job - 3D Studio Max has been on the market for decades with no third party support of the format as yet.
