2020 LayOut poor performance

No it is not, and the memory is stealing it from system RAM, so it has no dedicated VRAM of it’s own.

we only work in big .layout files ~100-250MB. so it might be a problem that only occurs with big models.

The biggest lag in Layout is usually a result of trying to vector or hybrid render an entire model. I haven’t noticed any performance issues with 2020 yet, but my projects are still in an early stage. I have no issues with my detail libraries and scrapbooks, but they are typically not huge files…30-80mb.

Hi,
we are only using the “raster mode” as hybrid and vector modes take much too long rendering times and are therefore unusable.

Any idea would be welcome

I am also experiencing horrendous performance with Layout 2020 in MacOS. I have the latest and greatest MacBook Pro 16, with AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB, 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 and 64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4.

Rendering times are between 30 seconds to a minute. Exporting a simple 9 page document to PDF took around 4 minutes. (it used to be a matter of seconds).

I am also experiencing some strange grid patterns on the screen (they don’t show up on the exported PDF).

Any solutions or suggestions?

Gus

I am experiencing the same issue, completely unworkable 2020 performance so much so that I have had to switch back and forth between 2020 and 2019 with my team which is also causing huge issues. I have been back and forth with the Sketchup team via email and basically they have told me they think it’s a hardware problem but I have not had the chance to get into apple to repair my computer. I am getting lines in my screen like you show but not quite as gridded as you show, more like cross hatches here and there.

My computer:
acBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)
2.9 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i9
32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Radeon Pro 560X 4 GB

Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 M

Which OS with that machine? Catalina or earlier?

Hardware problem? So I am supposed to have a hardware problem in 3 MBP and one iMac Pro?

That is an excuse from the SketchUp team which are really lacking commitment to the MacOS platform. They have been incredibly lazy and the results are noticeable.

My partner is using a much older macbook pro (2016) and his is working fine. I use 2 external monitors as well on my newer macbook pro (2018) but I’m unconvinced that is the issue since all of the issues began with 2020 and 2019 still works fine in isolation on my computer.

I really thought about buying the same machine as a “last best machine” to run Mojave on since that’s the last MacOS to run 32 bit apps. What I might do with it is partition the drive, and put Mojave on one partition and Catalina + going forward on the other. That way you can always reboot the machine in Mojave when the need arises.

I don’t think that’s the case. From what I’ve seen, most of the SU team use Mac and not so much PC.

I have the same issues with 2020 LO. I too use it for business, and its become unusable. I have to restart it about every hour because it becomes so slow and boggy. Nothing has changed on my work flow from 2019.

Have you figured out a work around fix yet? I’m not holding my breath that the SU team are going to do anything about it.

Here are my computer stats:
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)
4.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Radeon Pro 580 8 GB

thanks

I have a couple of cases that I’m investigating, and both of them have in common that the problem starts after some time. If you quit LayOut and reopen you document, is it improved for a while, and if so for how long? Or do you need to restart to get the original performance?

What render modes do you tend to use with the SketchUp Model panel?

I have been going back and forth with sketchup for a month and a half as of writing this post and no solution has been made. I’m in a HUGE pickle here because I work with a team of three other freelancers who are all on 2020 and we cant switch back and forth between files because the links to the SKP 2020 - 2019 files break. Its a massive massive problem and I keep getting bumped around to different technicians on the Sketchup end. I’m glad to hear it’s not an isolated incident and nor just on my computer but really I need a solution FAST!

Improved for about 10 minutes and then dimensioning, reordering the sheet order, moving images and shapes, writing text all does not register unless I move over a page and then come back to the page I am working on. If I was a one person team no big deal but I have three other people working in 2020.

I have been offered by sketchup to do a screen share meeting but then it fizzled out on there end after I tried to set up a time to meet. I keep making this request and I have also emailed a video of the issue to the team because they cant seem to duplicate on their end.

Updated to GTX 1660 Nividia card with 6 GB ram…

So while it is a little quicker, updating the video card did very little to solve the issue.
My take is someone at Trimble needs to figure out what went wrong with the 2020 upgrade and FIX IT. I did not have this issue with 2019, and using the same computer, but updated ram and video card did little to resolve the lag time.

Layout was having a fit this morning, loaded really slow and did not respond to commands. A quick restart of the PC was the cure for the poor response.
FWIW
The following appeared in event viewer about the time Layout was unresponsive

@colin - There doesn’t seem to be a specific time that triggers the drop in performance. Some sheets are in raster renders, and some sheets have vector renders. I haven’t noticed it being tied to one or the other as its happening on most sheets.

To be more specific of what I’m experiencing when the performance drops drastically — trying to select and modify or move or delete any existing layout created items (e.g. text block, dimension, annotation leader, linework) there is a considerable amount of lag time. I might click on an object to move or delete or modify it, and it won’t display the action for several seconds after the fact. Obviously impossible to work like this as you can’t see what you are doing until well after you did it.

Aside from this, in general, there seems to be poorer performance in layout 2020. I have read threads connecting this to the display color settings on macs. Any thoughts on that?

I have had people try different color settings, without it helping.

When you are seeing the lag, can you try the same action, only do a slight zoom of the page immediately after the action? Does that then make it update right away?
