I managed to overwrite the latest copy of a sketchup file with an earlier version. However I have a .xml file type used for rendering in Kerkythea is it possible to convert this into a usable sketchup format?

Maybe? I found some code to transform the Kerkythe XML to .obj. There will not be much left of the SketchUp objects such as Layers, Scenes, Groups, Components, etc. Faces will all be triangulated. If you are lucky, the model may be salvageable.
The license indicates I am able to redistribute it.
