Won't detect 3d file type on import. Pro version

Sketchup Pro annual plan.

My cowork is able to import .obj file types and other common file types with a Pro version of sketchup 2024. Windows.

I have the same installed (already uninstalled and reinstalled) and I am NOT able to import 3d models into the paid Pro version at my job.

What do you suggest?

OBJ is not a file type that can be imported natively. There are some extensions that can do it. Perhaps your coworker is using an extension for that.

What other common file types specifically?

Your coworker probably has an extension like Universal Importer installed.

We mostly care about OBJ or FBX. If one of these types can be imported, that would be amazing.

There are extensions that can import OBJ and FBX files.

They did not have ā€˜Universal Importer’ installed but they have had a Sketchup license for around six years so we are thinking they have some freebies that I dont have access to in their plugins/extensions. They claimed the $349 annual Pro license, but now Im suspecting they had the $700 studio version because they have a rare Revit importer extension that I now have to upgrade to the studio to get. So odd that importing 3d file types such as OBJ is not in the base software.

I tracked down ā€˜universal importer’ so far havent gotten it to work yet either. Sad day.

OBJ files cannot be natively imported on any version of SketchUp. The version your friend has sounds like the studio plan which has the ability to import Revit files via an included extension, but natively cannot import OBJ files, either. There are a handful of extensions that import OBJ. It’s likely that they are running one of those.

As others have said, those are not natively supported for import, just export.

You can import STL though, and there’s a few OBJ to STL converters around if that works for you?

USDZ import/export is also supported, if the other systems you’re using don’t support that there’s a good amount of converters around to convert from Autodesk’s FBX to USDZ

Universal Import extension allows you to import 50+ file formats not natively supported…

If you have installed it with the Extension Manager [for RBZ] or SketchUcation ExtensionStore³ [sidestepping the RBZ download], and you’ve restarted SketchUp then the tool appears under the File menu as Import with Universal Importer…
Follow the instructions it gives [also look at its thread on SketchUcation…
