They did not have āUniversal Importerā installed but they have had a Sketchup license for around six years so we are thinking they have some freebies that I dont have access to in their plugins/extensions. They claimed the $349 annual Pro license, but now Im suspecting they had the $700 studio version because they have a rare Revit importer extension that I now have to upgrade to the studio to get. So odd that importing 3d file types such as OBJ is not in the base software.
I tracked down āuniversal importerā so far havent gotten it to work yet either. Sad day.
OBJ files cannot be natively imported on any version of SketchUp. The version your friend has sounds like the studio plan which has the ability to import Revit files via an included extension, but natively cannot import OBJ files, either. There are a handful of extensions that import OBJ. Itās likely that they are running one of those.
As others have said, those are not natively supported for import, just export.
You can import STL though, and thereās a few OBJ to STL converters around if that works for you?
USDZ import/export is also supported, if the other systems youāre using donāt support that thereās a good amount of converters around to convert from Autodeskās FBX to USDZ
