I hope this message finds you well. I’ve been a loyal user of SketchUp for the past 8 years, and it has been a fundamental tool in my work. However, I find myself increasingly frustrated with the absence of a basic yet essential feature: the ability to create rounded rectangles natively within the software.
It feels disheartening to still rely on plugins for something as simple as a rounded rectangle in 3D, especially when other design software have incorporated such tools seamlessly. This missing feature adds unnecessary steps to my workflow and detracts from the efficiency that SketchUp is known for.
I urge you to consider adding a rounded rectangle tool in your future updates. It’s a small addition that could make a big difference for many users like myself, who depend on SketchUp for their daily design needs. Your attention to this would be greatly appreciated and would reaffirm my confidence in SketchUp as a modern and versatile design tool.
For your use the tools are necessary. For others not so. The use of plug-ins helps keep the base cost of SketchUp down, otherwise, the price would soar if all the plug-ins were included in the product. Note the prices of Autocad, Fusion 360, and others.
I’ve been using SketchUp for more than 20 years and can’t say that I’ve ever wished for a rounded rectangle tool. The native tools work just fine to create those and they are more flexible than a single tool would be.
Yes, it’s more steps than a dedicated tool would require, but you can draw an ordinary rectangle, use the two-point arc tool to round one corner and then double-click at each of the other corners to put the same round over on them.
I agree; A native function that works a lot like Fredo’s RoundCorner plugin would be a nice and welcome addition. On many occasions I’ve built out a nice model and just want to round off the edges/corners at that point. I use RoundCorner all the time for this, because using native tools to do the same thing would be very, very cumbersome.
I may be missing something, but I think the OP is asking for a tool to draw planar rounded rectangles, as found in most 2D drawing apps. Like @DaveR, I only occasionally need such shapes so a dedicated tool for them wouldn’t save me much total time. But I suppose there are other use cases where it would.
Rounding the edges a 3D shape is a different task. One can use pushpull and/or follow me to do a lot of this, though places where more than two edges meet are pretty awkward without extensions.
By definition, a rectangle is a planar shape. It may be embedded and oriented in 3D but it is still planar. That’s why I didn’t take the OP’s wording to mean a rectangular solid the way you did.
I know the definition of rectangle thanks. It was just an interpretation of his request. My thoughts on having native beveling/rounding of 3D shapes still stands.
