Now I’m trying to pick specific things to paint and everything is turning out the same color. Im trying to get a finished wood look on the interior of the cabinets, and a painted look on the outside
Do you work with groups and components? Do you apply textures to faces or directly to the group?

I used components but not groups, do you think that what was causing the issue?
Just learn the basics, you can watch the video dezmo indicated, and you should be fine.
I don’t think components or groups would cause any problems. They both have their common and different properties. The thing is, you have to take the time and learn how to use them, and how to use the tools interacting with them.
Simply put, if you paint either a group or component when it is not open for editing the whole thing will be painted, unless there are overriding material painted directly on the faces (painted while open for editing, or before being grouped)
