Not sure but maybe your filename is too long…
Do you use cloud storage to save your data so that synchronisation errors can occur?
I think total path length is 256 characters, but it’s been a long time since I’ve used a Windows machine.
OP- Why is it trying to save to ‘recovered’ files? Where are you saving your working copies? - and how do you manage that file name? I mean, it’s good to know there are 2CLAMS and no Sidewalks, but perhaps there is a better way?
Hi
I don’t think so I have used that name for over a month while I make ultimate corrections
Thank you
OK thank you
I will shorten it
Regards
Mmmh I never encountered anything with Microsoft antivirus for WIN11
but I will have my SO look into it
I am not creating my own virus …well not yet but maybe I’ll be gaga enough
Thank you for your time
Yes I must admit …after two years on a file and near 800 saves one gets rather obsessed loosing something that took x hours to fix
My CLAM is a space in my game concept that’s inspired by a giant deep see clam.
Just so you know I am not yet in a sort of delirium
My initial question was triggered by the fact I noticed that I had shut down my PC and NOT saved and the auto save did not function and lets say I had to redo an entire day’s of stuff.
This is a screenshot from within UE 5.4
I wish UE forum was as helpful and kind as SketchUP.
They come across rather do I dare say totally void no reply’s to questions
or nearly condescending like " Go google it"
As always if like myself one does not master all the IT lingo of a software which I don’ there and for sure not in UE.,
One can google loads and still not get the right answers if the questions weren’t asked correctly.
So KUDOS to this Forum as always coming to my help being 55+ (for ever that is haha) I don’t want to change the number some may send me invites to the retirement home .
Kind regards
Hello
Sorry I had to distance myself from my project for a while
as it was too frustrating .
No I don’t use any cloud …I am on the old SKU19
and will attempt to stay with it.
Thank you.
Hello
I come back to your reply after attempting to find the reason.
I went back into my model. This is an attempted for a “game space”.
So I have many screens inside that simulate LED screens
most show scenes from within my own model but different areas
I used to use only Lumion renderings imported as rectangular images
pose them on the face then explode them and cut away what’s outside of the
irregular frames (round triangular oval etc) They all have a small volume frame around
(like a TV)
.
But since I managed to bring my model into UE 5.4 I thought to use some
highres screenshots from UE.
When I went back and reopened my SketchUP model and tried to go back to what I was doing last when the message appeared, something happened that was quite surreal, just when I zoomed into that space (actually it was the oval pic left in my screenshot, one of the newly imported picture.
It jumped at me like as if all the different colour areas of the image were pulled (pull/push) towards me.
I thought how can a photo become a 3D area ?
I clicked into it and deleted it as I had one time an “array” that created a crazy amount of
star like projection through my entire model.
I went back to other pics but naturally none of them allowed me to pull on any part of a photo.
(I am not on drugs or hallucinating or going gaga, I am well, just in case someone thinks along that way )
I knew since then that these lines seem to go on for ever in all 360 degree
This was different in another way. The pull like extrusions went towards me towards the mouse in a sharply pointed pyramid, and as I zoomed out it followed my mouse through the entire model
Could an imported jpg from another software origin like UE bring in like a “corrupted file”
I went back to before I changed all the pictures and that file does NOT show that warning
So I will be able to go back one month and start all over again my “last corrections” which were mainly to improve areas that can be turned into light emitters in UE
I was happily surprised that the areas defined in SKU as light emitter colours just give the right amount of ambient light in UE rather than installing x amounts of lights here and there.
I have made a few other quick models to play around and do not get the error message at all so it seems that something is inside that ONE big model file that keeps on generating that error.
There is is again
That is so bizarre
I have NEVER an imported jpg file showing up there in the corner.
That is the jpg that I imported into the LED screen I posted a pic before.
As today I opened the file again and tried to delete stuff that would not
save as deleted last time
There is the jpg file showing up there. It’s NOT a scene
…I deleted that before already a week ago
When I opened the file today it wasn’t there and then when I want to save it again
under a new name it is there again.
Whats the mirage?
Can I look for that file name in the outliner to see if deleting it up there on the left did work or not?
to type that name into the outliner took like 30seconds to load the name after I typed it
but when I move around the model nothing seems slow
I also don’t know what that “filter” be used to find a file inside the outliner ?
AS per picture now inside the model that particular screen is deleted for sure.
So I saved under a new name
the mysterious screenshot file on top left showed up again
although I clicked “delete” in the previous saved file
(parts of deleted in this process were saved others not in terms of lines)
So now I am saving again in a new file name 816b
After I close SKU and reopen it, my last file never shows up
but another one I created separably just to calm down shows up as saved
I actually made a post about it this afternoon asking a question
The one showing next to 812bis is from prior all this issues started and thats over a month ago.
Show us a screen shot of your scenes tray.
This sound like a graphics issue.
You are working on a very large model with a very high polygon count and a lot of textures…
Hi-res textures do also put a strain on your system as well as hi-poly count.
My guess: your computer and graphics card are maxing out as you are adding more geometry and more textures. Your budget is depleting fast due to your demands…
Remember that SketchUp was once made for architectual modeling in real world size. Not planet like size…
One of the error messages involve saving the SKP to a ‘J’ drive - not your normal ‘C’ drive…
Remotely working and saving a SKP can cause issues.
Work on it in the ‘C’ drive, saving as you go, and make copies onto your other location [like the ‘J’ drive] when done - that way you don’t get failures when saving remotely.
Using the system to copy a file to a remote location is far more robust than saving it remotely within an application.
That scene tab / jpg name looks like what happens when you use match photo. Maybe you did it by accident?
I really applaud that you’ve stuck with this so long, but you are just making this so painful for yourself.
You need better computer skills - files, folders, saving - and a proper system of understanding what / how you are changing things.
Using names like
‘final copy cool roof PURPLEWINDOWS no clam FinalFinal this time I really mean it WorkingCopy’
is a recipe for disaster. Maybe you should keep the file names simple and keep a notebook on the desk and write down the updates / changes with pen / pencil and keep the names shorter? You could do ‘Save As… give it todays date, add a line in your sketchbook / notebook and write down what you added / changed.
As I mentioned in a previous post you might be exceeding the file path limit in windows (256 characters) - but I’m a Mac user so not sure if that is a real thing people encounter. And as TIG mentions - why are you not saving to only the C drive? How did you open this particular file?
Have you thought about working on several small files that are combined into 1? I often do this with my architectural models… this would add a layer to your workflow that might make the modeling easier / faster - but seeing how you are doing with saving / file naming - maybe this wouldn’t be a good option for you.
Are you using Tags (Layers?) to control model visibility?
Do you purge stuff you don’t need on a regular basis?

-This might have been it
I deleted all these pics and since then it is saving again but still when I open SKU the last file isn’t the one I worked on I mean THIS model…
I have to go to the file explorer and say open file with

-you seemed to have followed my evolution. Yes I can’t give this project up as everyone says you’d never manage and still I have it all in UE now
Thanks so much

I just started a notebook this morning thank you…yea doing things on paper. I have thousands of screen pics i take with my phone that are in one directory

I don’t understand why the autosave wants to save somewhere else. When I save me files it’s always into disc J then the path
I have cleared onto a "parking drive " 450GB from my 3D disc to make sure there are 500GB free space I have 256GBof Memory Ram but my graphic is only a Nvidia 1070

Yes I’d say once a week.
Thank you so much for spending your precious time to assist me I wish I could share more here
in terms of the entire model but it’s the internet and just some may take it all and run and have better means to built etc.
Now I am learning how to walk in my model and collisions
I wanted to add more light emitting materials and that when I created all this havoc going back into my original “final” file that’s as most of the time never turns out to be really final till it is.
