It’s a hack and involves additional work but it works for me and I am happy with it.

I create “hatch” patterns in SketchUp:

If it’s simple 'decent ’ hatching for in Layout, i.e. vector, then I discovered this discussion at Skectucation: https://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=66503 I’m not suggesting it’s necessarily a solution for everyone… (it works for me) And as for lineweights, then if it’s for Layout, you could look into Mike Brightman’s method of stacked viewports in Layout.

Simon, These are the sort of details that I either have entirely pre-drawn as LO vector linework or will custom draw directly in LO using new vector linework and pre-drawn ‘components’ where I have them.

Then I create clipping masks using regular shapes and this curious feature of Layout:
