Uploading GIF's or .mov

that it may be a factor…

@RTCool, you may have a 4 MB upload limit…

some people do…

The difference I see is total file size possibly. Dave’s is only 1.4 mb.

So where does it say what the limits are? Are they stated anywhere?

you used to get a warning, but I think they may now just cap the size for images…

I’m not sure if it’s on the discourse site or if it’s a SU forum setting…

Thanks. This is probably it.

The most glaring difference (besides filesize) is the color profile.

What @DanRathbun said is what I was thinking but didn’t have the words for. That’s why I wanted you to try something less colorful.

Sorry for slow reply - broke for supper. I usually set the Licecap capture window to about 400x400. That’s a separate question from what size the browser is when I upload or view. Also seems to be separate from how large the gif displays on discourse?

I made it be bigger.

I’ve had this issue too, they come out tiny. I just redo and try to make shorter and it works, so maybe a file size issue. You can as Colin did change the numbers of the file size in the upload details, but while it changes the overall size it doesn’t change the resolution.

But again to my point (and Dan’s), there’s much more detail in the way of color depth in @RTCool’s GIF than in mine.

I’m guessing a simple, flat colored model compresses better for file size than something like a photograph.

Gifs generally record using a green screen to reduce the file size, if a few tools are moving around the screen there is very little data changing from frame to frame. Whereas an image moving changes nearly every pixel in every frame.
Which is why I make my gifs so simple and try to move the camera as little as possible.

Gifs above 5.10 MB will be resized and made small (forum settings).

Can you point to where it says stuff like this?

A while ago, when uploading a GIF, it wrote that there is a limit of 5,10MB and you couldn’t upload it. Now I see that it is no longer written, and you can upload GIFs that exceed this limit, but are automatically resized (made small).

I see. Thanks.

Unfortunately these limits are somewhat changeable, they seem to vary or increase from time to time with no warning, I’ve seen people struggle to attach a 3mb file and others easily upload ones as large as 9mb, perhaps if you follow the forum forum you’d get info about these things. ‘I think’ some changes are made by discourse and some are made internally. That has been my experience in the past when an admin long time back for another forum. It may be very different here.
Rule of thumb I use for my Gifs, frame size 499 x 499 pix and less than 3mb. If I have to use larger than 3mb I upload it to imgur and use the link.
