Animated GIFs not animating

I’m missing something regarding inline animated gifs. Is there a size threshold over which the gif is made a thumbnail? If so, what’s the size?

Through trial and error I’ve found the file size isn’t the crucial thing it’s the image size. Keep it under 499 X 499 pixels and it will run happily but break the 500 and it will be static and need a click to make it work.

I remember when you asked the question I wanted to know too. When I eventually figured out what worked consistently I forgot to come back here.
