I have sketchup 2017 as the free version, and for some reasons my unique button is grayed out and I am not able to make a unique component. any thoughts on this?
Do you have more than one of the components in the model, you can’t make a single component unique.

No it doesn’t seem to matter about if it’s one component, it is still greyed out.
Share your SketchUp file that shows this.
It needs to be more than one.
In other words: a single (just one instance of a) component in your modeling space is unique.
(what is the superlative degree of unique?)
Unique-er, unique-est
If there’s only one instance of the component in the model it can’t be anymore unique-er than it is. It is already the unique-est component.
