Unexpected file format and bug splat when opening skp file

@colin
I’m having what I believe to be a similar issue - my colleage has been working on a relatively large file (100mb) for a couple of days and when I’ve tried to open on my machine to render in VRAY before issuing to client, its giving me an unexpected file format message and I am unable to use.
Can you help me with this? We’re both using a licensed sketchup 2022.
Best, Stefan

Is your colleague still able to open the file on his/her computer? If so, I recommend that he/she purges it and saves as a copy and you try to open that.

Hi Anssi - Yes they are and unfortunately I’ve tried that with no success.

Here you go. There was a bad object of some sort. Plenty of unused stuff. Purging unused components and materials reduce file size by nearly half.

Reduced file size by more than 74%.

You should correct face orientation. There should be no exposed back faces (shown in blue) in your model.

thank you so much

Hi. Happy new year everyone. I also facing the same problem. Anyone can help me with that problem?

Here’s the link for my 3d…thank u in advance for the help.

I’ll see what I can do. What version of SketchUp are you really using? The ‘Free Pla’ you put in your forum profile is the web based SketchUp Free but it doesn’t create a .skb file. Please correct your profile.

Thank u DaveR. Already updated my profile.

Thank you. Evidently you need to upgrade to the current version of SketchUp 2023. If you did you would be able to open this file. There’s a bad group indentified when it opens.

In addition to that I found and fixed incorrect tag usage.

And a whole bunch of excessively huge texture images.

After cleaning up the model that far the file size is reduced by 82%. It’s still a huge file and you should go throug the model to clean it up further. I’ll upload it to DropBox and share the link shortly.

Edit to add the link to the file.

thank you so much for your help. Really appreciate it. And thank also for your advices and suggestion for this problem.

You’re welcome. BTW, I forgot to mention that there are a lot of exposed back faces in your model. Here I changed the back face color to pink to make them easier to see. You should get in the practice of ensuring proper face orientation before you start adding materials to the model.

Oh okay. Thank you and noted for that. :+1: :+1:

Hi! I have been going through the same problem and I can’t find any option to recover the information and I get the same message when opening the file. If there is anyone that can assist me with that file ( link for the file here : WeTransfer - Send Large Files & Share Photos Online - Up to 2GB Free ) I will be super grateful! Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi, I have the same problem with unexpexted file format, can someone help me please?

I couldn’t recover anything in the scene. The Components tray has one component in it, you could see if that is worth having.
