As I am working with this I find that using the “hide rest of model”, “hide similar components” functionality of Sketchup when “inside” a group or component also helps hide unwanted geometry when smoothing complex intersecting or overlapping surfaces.
I have these shortcuts assigned to ctrl-9 and ctrl-0
Those shortcuts also make it simple to toggle back and forth between showing and hiding stuff. Just a minute ago I used that toggle to show the rest of the model while editing a component so I could place some guidelines in reference to another component. Then I hit the shortcut again to get rest of the model oout of my way.
