Unable to use shortcut for Make Group after Pasting in Place

Hello, using the newest version on Windows 11, 26.2.243. Found a new bug regarding Paste in Place and then immediately attempting to Make Group while having the Paste in Place still selected using the shortcuts.

To recreate this bug, draw a rectangle. Select and Copy the rectangle. Now Paste in Place (shortcut ALT+V) and then use shortcut CTRL+G to Make Group in the same process without clicking. Unfortunately the shortcut CTRL+G to Make group does not work any longer, and you have to go to Edit>Make Group to get it to Group. Please fix this very annoying new bug.

Thank you.

EDIT - Further investigation show that I can also not UNDO with CTRL+Z after Pasting in Place. In fact it appears that after Pasting In Place, no other shortcuts that use CTRL can be used while the Pasted object is still selected.

Alt key on Windows shifts focus to the top menu bar, which blocks the next shortcuts until you click back into the workspace… try remapping Paste in Place to Shift+V. That should fix it.

For some users. Not for all.

Alt+V works fine as a shortcut for Paste in place for me and Alt does not shift focus to the top menu bar.

thanks for pointing that out… i thought it was a general windows thing. anyway, worth trying shift+v to see if it works.

I’ve been using Alt+V for years. I’m not going to change that due to a bug in the program.

I have been, too.

@DaveR Does that mean you can confirm this bug as the same problem for you?

As I wrote:

So, no. Right now it is not a problem for me. I’m aware it has been a problem for others. It was a problem for me in one release of an earlier version of SketchUp but it is not in the current 2026 release. I’ve also used Alt+C to activate CleanUp3 and it works as expected.

My reply saying I have been, too was related to using Alt+V for Paste in place. I’ve used that shortcut for more than 15 years.

Check your shortcut settings, I suspect it may be set to Shift+g by default.

Thanks, but no, it’s Ctrl+G here and it works all of the other times, except Immediately after Pasting in Place. I guess I need to open yet another support ticket…

What happens if you do Cut>Paste in Place>Make Group?

It will only work if I do not use the shortcut keys. I can do it if I use the menu Edit>…

Alt key shortcuts focusing the menu bar is a bug we’re tracking, if it’s any consolation. This is related to menu bar mnemonics, where the Alt key is prematurely triggering navigation mode.

Alt Key issue makes more sense because even using M for Move after Pasting in Place with Alt+V no longer works either.
