Hi, I am a brand new user, using a free trial. I’m trying to familiarize myself with SketchUp as it seems necessary in the design field I’m attempting to enter, although it wasn’t taught in my masters program.
I’m working through a landscape rendering exercise provided by SketchUp, following the videos. I’ve worked through it a few times, and around this point in the exercise I start to encounter what I think are performance issues, although obviously could be my own errors. In this file I can no longer click into group to select the faces, which at this point I’m supposed to start push/pulling to create topography.
The orbit tool has also stopped working. when I click hold the scroll button on my mouse it takes me into some unknown space, I can only find the model again by selecting the top camera view. Same problem if I use my track pad in this file, although orbiting is not an issue in other SketchUp exercise files.
Other info that seems to be referenced in other topics:
macOS Sonoma 14.7.8 (I think its updated to the latest)
Apple M1 Pro chip
16 GB RAM
I’m not really a computer person and obviously new to the program so if there’s some other info I can provide please let me know. Thank you for any help!
You have the Camera placed poorly from trying to work in Parallel Projection. Set the Camera to Perspective and hit Zoom Extents. While you are doing your modeling leave the camera set to Perspective. Save Parallel Projection for scenes. It would also be wise to set up a “working” scene with the camera set to Perspective and zoomed to show the entire image object you are working with.
By the way, please correct your forum profile. There is no Classic license for SketchUp 2026.
A little more: Make sure you are using tags correctly. All edges and faces should be created AND remain untagged. Only groups and components should be given tags. I fixed the incorrect tag usage in your model.
