Hi everyone. My first post here.
I just upgraded from Sketchup Pro 2024 to 2025 on Win11.
When trying to open ANY .skp file I get an error saying “Failed to open XXX.skp” and then a blank Sketchup window appears.
I am still able to open all the files from Sketchup itself, which is a workaround but not ideal.
It happens for all the files, regardless of the Sketchup version they were created on. I even created a blank file in Sketchup 2025, saved it and got same error when trying to open directly by clicking the .skp.
I’ve tried reinstalling, repairing the setup, clearing any default program settings for .skp files and re-setting to Sketchup (including clearing the registry entries) and disabling the Welcome window in Sketchup.
The problem does not appear on another PC where I have Sketchup 2025 installed as well. What can be causing this? Please help…
Looks like you’re trying to open files saved directly to the cloud. You could try download the file to your computer first and see if the file can be opned from there. It may be that the access time is just too long for the computer.
Unfortunately many users working on files saved directly to OneDrive or similar cloud locations have experienced file corrption that is not reversible. The advice it to save to a folder on the internal drive and if you need to, copy the file to the cloud.
I assume since yor profile says you have SketchUp 2024 and 2025, you have a current subscription license. That provides you with unlimited storage on Trimble Connect. In additon to saving your files to the internal drive you should save a backup to Trimble Connect. That’ll give you several options to retrieve a file if one of them becomes damaged.
Many thanks for quick reply.
You’re right, once I saved the file to a local drive the issue is gone on this PC.
I’m still puzzled as to why this doesn’t happen on another PC which opens the file from the same OneDrive location with no issue. Also this did not happen on both PCs when I was on Sketchup 2024.
I must say I like using OneDrive because of the File History feature and being able to recover any previously saved version of the file easily.
Surely must be some way to get it to work with OneDrive as it does on the other PC?
I expect the access time is different between computers for some reason.
Trimble Connect automatically creates incremental saves of the SketchUp file each time you save there.
There may be however based on the experiences of many other folks, I think continuing to work on files saved to OneDrive is very risky. If it’s no big deal to lose your your work, maybe it’s OK.
We regularly see files that have been damaged to the point that 50% or more, sometimes 100% of the file is nothing but zeroes. There is no recovery for that.

You mean such damage often happens to files saved to OneDrive?
Wouldn’t restoring the file to a previously saved version from File History work in such a case?
FWIW, if you open a file saved in your Trimble Connect storage it is first downloaded to your computer. Autosaves are saved locally. It’s only when you choose to save to Trimble Connect again that the file gets saved there.
This corruption shouldn’t happen but it does. Preventing it isn’t difficult and to me, seems worth an extra step or two. Some people claiim it takes too much time to save the file locally and then copy it to their OneDrive cloud location but I expect you could do that for every SketchUp file you ever create and not spend as much time as you would recreating one that winds up as all zeroes.
