Sketchup 2023 "failed to open document"

Hi everyone
I’m encountering a “Failed to open document” error in SketchUp 2023 when trying to open my files. I have restarted the application and my computer, and also tried changing the file extension from .skb to .skp, but the issue still hasn’t been resolved.

Has anyone experienced this or knows how to fix it? I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Thank you!

Many people have experienced it.

But we can’t tell you if it is salvageable unless you share the file with us.
(Using stuff like wetransfer if it’s too big)

Any reason you didn’t switch to 2024? It’s included in your subscription, and it could very well solve the issue.

Here is the file for you to review and help me with. Thank you!

I don’t have all the tools I usually have at hand. however, I can tell you that the skp refused to open, and the renamed skb caused a crash after refusing to open
( Crash #632 @colin )
second try simply refused to open, but no crash.

Unfortunately, a big chunk of both files is filled with zeros.

Do you use any kind of backup system, even the History feature in Windows? With something like that you could look at older versions of the file, and see at what point it started to have zeros in it.

Sometimes it can be fixed by opening it in a newer version or by someone with advanced tools like Colin.
But a better question would be: how can I prevent this…
It seems that most people with broken files are working from and/or saving directly to a location other than their internal hard drive/ssd.
This can be:

  • a Usb stick
  • an external hard drive/ssd
  • a network drive
  • a server
  • a cloud location (except Trimble Connect)
  • even a local folder (on your internal drive) that is live synced to the cloud.

Avoiding these locations will decrease your chance of a broken file significantly!
