Once an object has been made a component, can that action be reversed; or must I redraw it?
I drew a 6-sided box from sides, top and bottom that were made components in order to move them around without affecting other parts of the drawn object and ‘cut’ a lid from it. Now I cannot manipulate just the lid because it is made up of parts of 5 components.
Right click on the component and select Explode. That will “unmake” a component.
Very likely you could just edit a component and manipulate what you want to manipulate without exploding it, though.

I had tried to explode the components but I had made components within components and didn’t carry the explode process to all pieces. After having done so, I’m able to manipulate the parts quite easily.
