Two points regarding v2024

I just tried v2024 and noticed that the standard views are now aligned based on the coordinate system of the active component/group. When did this change? At least in 2021 it was still based on global coordinates. And is there a way to switch it back? I mean to have the option to align it to local axes would be nice, but normally i need it globally, so this really would cause some problems for me.

And what is this gap?!? Really? Is it possible to disable this useless “flyout”?

I cannot (yet) answer the first part of your question. I’m not sure what you meant by that.

Second part, about the gap. It’s because that left toolbar has a built-in drop-down menu (see that little arrow?), some other toolbars also have those buildin and will couse a gap in between.

If you prefer not to have that gap between them, you could try open an alternate toolbar with the same commands but without dropdown menu.
For example, in stead of the ‘getting started’ toolbar, use the ‘large tool set’ which contains about the same commands, but without any dropdown menus.

Thanks for the hint. I would have used the “large toolset” - even if my previous arrangement was actually different - but with the “large tool set” things are even worse, because for some unknown reason the spacing between the two rows is narrower than two toolbars next to each other, which eliminates a complete column underneath.

Ok, I have now realized that toolbars are now configurable… So the second problem is no longer an issue.
But the first question still remains. Is there a way to align the views to the global coordinate system?

This changed in SketchUp 2022 based on numerous feature requests from users. See the release notes on this.

Standard Views respect model axes

In previous versions of SketchUp, Standard View commands – Top, Front, Right… – did not respect customized model axes. So, you would need to use the Align View command to produce camera views for properly aligned elevation and section views. Now, the Standard Views will behave as expected to produce properly aligned views to customized axes. One other small change: the Align View command is now accessible in the Context Menu, even if other entities (like edges or objects) are also in the selection set.

Create scenes with the model axes in their default orientation.

Thanks for the workaround. Yes this could help sometimes. But since it saves the camera position too, in bigger models it could be quite annoying.
Would be good to have both options. I’m using shortcuts to switch between views. If there would be separate commands for local axes, i would maybe add the shift key to access them…

the axis manager extension can help sort out axis issues. If you dont want to change the camera update the scene from the scene tray not the tab it lets you select what gets updated and you can turn off the camera update.
