Turn off new toggles

@ene_su I’ll see if I can record a video of the sampler in action but for me it’s definitely ’sticking’, not all the time but around 50%+ of the times I use it.

My usual sequence is to press B, hold SHIFT, click on the surface I want to sample, release SHIFT (return to bucket) and then click on the surface(s) I want to paint but….
When I release SHIFT the sampler remains active and clicking on the target surface results in sampling that instead of painting it.

If I go slowly and watch the cursor I can see that the sampler is still active after I release SHIFT and single pressing SHIFT will ‘toggle’ it back to paint.

I’m guessing the bit where I ‘hold’ SHIFT is the key part but that’s the way I’ve always done it prior to the toggles being initially introduced.

Any chance you have turned on sticky keys in windows, it’s a setting that is offered if it thinks you are doing lots of double tapping.

I struggle to reproduce this. Do you have the latest version of SketchUp?

@box as I was writing my post above I was thinking the same thing, I’ll check when I’m in the office later.

@ene_su yea, I’m upto date on everything related (Windows, drivers, apps etc) I’ll check Box’s suggestion and record a video if necessary.

And there is a ******* keyboard shortcut to turn it on. I don’t remember what it is but I have several times hit it by mistake.

5 shifts.

@ene_su
Opps, in my post above I said I held the Shift key drown, I meant the ALT key to get the sampler, sorry if that confused.

Did some more testing…
I don’t have sticky keys on in windows 10 so it’s not that.
I made a simple model of just some coloured squares and repeatedly sampled them and COULDNT get the sampler to stick but……
I then tried with one of my heavy models (200Mb +) with lots of material with large texture maps an I COULD get it to stick on the sampler about 50% of the time when sampling them.
Repeatedly sampling the same 3 or 4 materials will initially cause the sticking but then it works as expected but ….
performing several non material related actions (copy/draw/move etc) and then a sample ([B],[ALT][CLICK]) of a heavy material will almost always cause it to stick.

I wasn’t able to do a screen recording as I don’t have anything suitable installed. Any suggestions?

@Mark, we may have a bug with large models. I haven’t tested myself, but my suspicion is that lag (even subtle lag) could interfere with the timing and feedback.

Could you look into or delegate this?

@ene_su “Lag” … that sounds and feels right,
In my testing yesterday there was a momentary pause between me [ALT] clicking a material and it being selected, I can certainly imagine something timing out in that period.
Do you want me to DM you a link to one of my models for testing ?

Technically this isn’t my area, I work with extensions and APIs, but as a 14+ year user myself I really understand the pain. Feel free to send the model and I’ll try to describe the issue and delegate it internally to the right team.

Logged internally as SU-49778.

Thanks for reporting this!

Hi, I’m still having issues with using copy holding down CTL. It only works hitting CTL once and you get the plus symbol and press CTL again to end the copy command. I just want it to work like it used to, I don’t know if that’s called sticky keys or not? I’ve tried every setting, I’ve tried each windows ‘sticky keys’ setting by pressing shift 5 times.

Thanks

Have you updated to the latest version?

Hi, yes to 2021.1332 the most current version

There is a regression in Move tool that has been logged internally as SKOR-15283.

Technically the Move tool has always used a press-toggle pattern, not the hold pattern of e.g. Paint Bucket or Scale. However, the tool used to react to the key being pressed down. You could keep it down with no harm done but you didn’t have to. Now it reacts to key up, meaning you can’t hold it down anymore while using it.

This subtlety slipped through when the tools’ original behaviors were mapped out prior to their redesign.

I’m in SU 22.0.354 and I still suffer from this paint bucket/color picker toggle issue. I want SU to react like it used to (I use SU since v2.1 in 2002 so it’s difficult to change a habit that long). So what? is it still not possible to toggle these toggle behaviour off? Personally I hate it, it slows my workflow so much. It was the same thing with the prepick pushpull surface affair, several versions ago. And the way the ‘click style’ choice is still a mystery for me (the ‘auto detect’)
What I hate most is when the paint bucket switches to a ‘paint all connected faces’ mode without asking, just after picking a material.

Still no improvement nor news on this behaviour?
I probably sound like a broken turntable LP but I really miss the time @LastSoftware listened to the users feedback and released updates asap…

I’m still using v2021 and yes, this “feature” is very annoying. So this problem is still existing in v2023? Unbelievable…

I mean, it was annoying for a like a week, but you soon get used to the change.
It makes it much simpler to flip into the web version when I need to also.
