Trying to open a SketchUp 2017 file with SketchUp 8 - get file version error

Trying to open a sketchup file with sketchup 8 get error saying file I am try to open is version 17.2.2555 and tells me to update?

Yes, older versions of SketchUp cannot open files that are mad by newer versions…newer versions of SketchUp can open older files, and can ‘Save As’ lower version.

Is there a version 17

Yes, there were 8 new releases after the one you use. Time capsule?

Yes, the last free desktop version, for non- commercial use only, is Sketchup Make. Available for download (64 bit only) for Windows or Mac from https://help.sketchup.com/en/downloading-older-versions.

There’s also Sketchup Free, web only, also for non-commercial use only. https://app.sketchup.com. You’ll need to sign up for a free account.

Or there’s a plugin Eneroth’s Open Newer Version, which can open a newer version file and save it back to one you can open.

I’ve a feeling that only works for 64 bit Windows though.

What SU version are you using? 32 bit or 64 bit SU 8? Maintenance release M2 or the original?
