I have a basic set of toolbars and have them setup the way I work.
About a month ago, I noticed I was missing the zoom to model? icon not sure if that is the correct name.
I’ve tried adding it back in. I’ve tried resetting to default toolbar, I’ve tried to add new custom toolbar and dragged the icon to that new toolbar but every restart it disappears.
Last thing I just tried was to enable the “getting started” toolbar and removing all the icons I don’t use/need/want. restarted and that tool bar stuck but all the icons I removed popped back in. Below the crossed-out ones where removed and they popped back in once I restarted SketchUp
Close SketchUp. Go into Use/AppData/Local/SketchUp/SketchUp 2026/SketchUp and delete PrivatePreferences.json
Open SketchUp again and set up your toolbars. To ensure that the new .json file gets written make a simple SketchUp model and save it. You can delete it later.
See if your custom toolbar sticks after that.
You can’t permanently edit the Getting Started toolbar nor the Large Toolset.
Thanks Dave, I was trying not to rebuild my toolbars but will give that a shot in the am. Really wish with the current “subscription” model it would remember your settings, ie toolbars…
This has nothing to do with the “subscription” model. This sort of thing happened for some users prior to the switch to subscription licenses. The most common cause is incorrect installation of SketchUp on Windows. Windows can deny SketchUp permission to properly write the required .json files when SketchUp isn’t installed correctly in the first place.
For some Windows users, deleting the .json files is required after repairing the installation using Run as administrator from the context menu. This forces SketchUp to write an entirely new PrivatePreferences.json file.
FWIW, I’ve always installed SketchUp by right clicking on the installer and selecting Run as administrator. I’ve never had any problem with toolbars not sticking after I set them up.
Sorry Dave you misunderstood my comment. I know this has nothing to do with “Subscription”. I’m talking about having to rebuild my tool bars over and over again. after crashes and losing them, after upgrades, after trying to fix other issues where you have to delete .json files.
We now have to purchase a yearly subscription, and you should be able to save these settings under your subscription to easily reload. Along with settings.
This is somewhat ambiguous, does this mean you were an admin when you installed it,
Or (as has been pointed out many times when things like this aren’t working)
Did you select the .exe file, right click and choose Run as admin?
