Tool Icon Change in 23.1.315 - How do we feel about it?

At least we now have a ‘Dimension’ tool icon instead of an icon that was identical to the ‘Select’ tool for sooooo long. (the times I thought I was selecting while in fact I was still dimensioning).
But there’s some inconsistency between icons:

  • the ‘Line’ tool and the ‘Freehand’ tool both have a large pencil
  • the ‘Dimension’ tool has a small pencil accompanied by a tiny dimension line, hardly visible.

There’s not much difference between your icons and those currently in use.
Yours however do lack red that has some extra information in SketchUp’s icons.

Good examples are the ‘Arc’ and ‘Pie’ tools indicating which click comes first. And while using them you see what should be next (clicks and effect).

Dear Trimble if, after reading this thread, you would decide to tweak the iconage once again please implement it in conjunction with dark theme. This is way more important than icon style (99% of the built-in tools should be used via shortcuts anyway) BTW dark theme will hugely improve readability issue as well.

Well we got a Dark Theme on the iPad 1st so maybe this means we might FINALLY be getting one on the desktop version

I guess its different for everyone, depending on the sensitivity of their eyes. For me, the red dot takes most of the focus, the light blue mostly disappears into the background. I would prefer the ‘30-seconds icons’ by far - I can read those easily.

I don’t mind the red dots, I think they could be included. I just do not have time to tweak the icons that carefully, my 30 second icons were just a response to the posted request for examples (anyone else?). The contrast is the point.

In order to minimise the visual intrusion to my aesthetic sensibilities…

Curic’s DIO2 means that I don’t have to see the new pencil cursor in it’s various forms and the new eraser.

I have discovered FredoSketch so that I don’t have to see the new move tool cursor.

Fredo Joint Push/Pull to replace the new Push/Pull tool cursor.

And Fredo ThruPaint so I don’t have to see the ghastly new paint tool cursor.

Now I need to write myself a custom orbit tool :sob:

It seems that this hypothesis is true, I have felt some discomfort with this color, also the view icons are not clear as in previous versions

I don’t like the new colour scheme for the icons they’re not as distinctive and seem to merge with each other, now very frustrating to work with having been a user for 15+years, a step backwards in my opinion.
Should offer an option for “classic” icons,

The much larger problem are cursors - they are way too busy, too much colors (gotta be monochromatic!). This ugly red (especially in orbit) is SCREAMING. Awfully unprofessional.

Try Fredo6: LordOfTheToolbars. It recognizes toolbars/plugins/icons and allows you to create new icons and create custom toolbars. It will give you the option to create new (old) Sketchup icons/toolbars using original icons. The only thing, there is not an icon for the new ‘Flip’ and ‘Lasso’. I played with it for a little while and its an option. A few other items…what’s the deal with the new 1001 Bit Tools being all smooshed together? Also, why is the Shadows slide bar a different size from all others? I agree with everybody who has trouble quickly recognizing the new icons. I select icons with my peripheral vision while I’m modeling…easy with original icons…impossible with the new icon garbage.

The new tool icons are a real disappointment to the large graphic and easy to find original ones. It is difficult to distinguish the new small ones and so makes it harder to use even after getting somewhat used to the new ones it is harder to find them and select quickly.

Making tools look more like each other seems like a bad idea all around, especially for a program with so many tools. But the real problem for me is the low contrast between the light blue and the background gray. I cannot differentiate between them unless I switch to “Large Icons” and I’d sure rather be using that extra screen space for working, not storing tools.

The issue that I have with these new icons is that I’m mildly color blind which makes differentiating between the different icons as well as identifying the function of the tool based on the image very difficult. As someone with the “SketchUp Pro Quick Reference Card” printed on a 24" x 36" plotter (now completely useless), I find my workflow severely slowed down and quite frustrating.

It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact issue with these icons as everyone has a different opinion for why they like or dislike them, but for me its a combination of monotone colors and an oversimplification in design that makes readability go out the window almost completely. Where my eyes used to find color, contrast, and intuitive designs on the icons, they now find the same two tone color usage coupled with oversimplified images that completely lose the message they originally conveyed (the function of each tool).

I’m an advocate for always updating and using the latest versions of all of my software packages I use for work (AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Enscape) but I’m afraid this change is too much in the wrong direction for me. So until an option to revert the icons back to classic icons becomes available, you can find me on SketchUp 2022. Very disappointing … this is one of those things that really drives me crazy and reminds me how I feel about restaurants who remove menu items that have been a staple for the menu for years. It leaves a sour taste in your mouth and, for me, turns me off from eating at that restaurant ever again (Chick-Fil-A … I’m looking at you for removing my caesar wrap -_- ). Please consider changing them back or at the very least adding the ability to revert them to the previous icon set. Thank You.

Hate it - as an educator it sucks to have links to decades worth of mine and others really helpful videos and now it does not match what students are seeing. But honestly the worst is the color values - they do NOT show up on my overhead projector AT ALL. And I’m jumping up and down with a long pointer trying to show them where each teeny tiny blue and white icon it is. For years I’ve been able to say ‘ok now click on the yellow tape measure’ and it was yellow AND looked like a tape measure. Now there’s no distinct colors and honestly the icons are hard to read right in front of my own face due to low contrast and they also don’t do a good visual job of conveying their purpose.

I just updated SketchUp & now have the new tool icons and while I find the cursors more awkward than the previous I am wondering if anyone else is having issues like this one:

Can you say what issue your GIF shows?

Apologies, the tape tool covers the measurement when it is displayed. This seems to happen regardless of where the tool is placed.

Been thinking I’d get used to these new tool icons but now I’m months in it’s still really impeding my workflow. Just came here to see if others feel the same and it appears many do. The ‘pick size’ on the eraser, not sure what else to call it, is tiny. Would be good of that could be adjusted in the settings as it can be in autocad. I like a much bigger circle to aim with. Everything else as echoed above. All too uniform to the eye. Some of the other updates are good though.

Sketchup has been an invaluable tool in my daily. I heartily agree with others, I’m not a fan of the blah icons. These new icons are difficult to spot when trying to select the correct tool. It slows my work flow down and makes the program frustrating to use. With the old icons I could easily spot the one I wanted to use right away. Also being a little older and with less than perfect vision, I find the pasty light blue against red an odd choice for icon detail as they become very hard to tell apart.
